River Valley's Hoffman twirls another no-hitter

Winneconne's Whitford gets 300th varsity win; Poynette Head Coach reaches 550 mark

Winneconne 13, Berlin 1
The Winneconne Wolves beat Berlin 13-1 on Thursday. The win marked the 300th time in Head Coach Tim Whitford’s career that the Wolves have won a varsity softball game.  Whitford is in his 22nd  year as head coach at Winneconne. His name has been added to the Fastpitch Chronicle Coaches Honor Roll within the list of coaches who have recorded no less than 300 wins.

Deerfield 7, Horicon 1
The Demons rebounded and claimed the second game of the season between these two teams. Horicon had won the previous one 5-4. Deerfield holds a one-game lead in the conference race but Horicon the teams each have one loss in the right-hand column.

Pepin/Alma 13, Independence/Gilmanton 6
In one of those games where two teams with two community names, Pepin/Alma took down Independence/Gilmanton in a non-conference game.

Fox Valley Lutheran takes two from Ripon, 3-1 and 11-0

Fox Valley Lutheran got 11 strikeouts from Olivia Eichorst in a  3-1 over Ripon.  Eichorst fanned 11 batters to carry the Foxes to a 3-1 victory over Ripon at Ripon HS in seven innings. Eichorst also led the  offensive attack, as she got on base three times in the game. She scored one run and had one RBI. She singled in the sixth inning. The  Foxes stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring two runs on an RBI single by Vanessa Buman. The fifth inning saw Ripon score its only run on the day on an RBI single by A. Brewer. In game two Fox Valley took Ripon down 11-0. Buman hit one out of the park; Abby Radue, Brittany Vils and Sara Riehle had triples; Samantha Birling, Brittany Vils and Sara Riehle had doubles.  Sam Birling picked up the win for FVL.  The Foxes are now 12-4 overall and 10-2 in conference action.

Poynette 10, Lakeside Lutheran 0
The Pumas scored four runs in the first inning and added six in the second and claimed their 550th win with the same coach in the third base coaching box. Junior righthander Jordan Blochwitz cruised through the Warrior lineup relinquishing two hits to Mariah Kuhl including a double and a single to Emily Slade. Blochwitz sent eight Warriors down swinging while walking none. Senior outfielder Brittany Falk went 3-for-three with a three-run home run and two sharp singles. Sophomore  utility player Riley Barnharst had a 2x4 day including a double and two rbi while junior third sacker Jordyn Mackey wound up 2x3 with a pair of rbi. The Pumas collected 11 hits in all, got called out on strikes once and drew four walks and one hit batter off sophomore pitcher Hollie Doyle. "Lakeside made a couple of nice plays on defense to hold the run total down," said Pumas' Head Coach Bob Tomlinson. "A great snare on what appeared to be a liner through the hole at short that would have gone to the fence on the ground scoring two runs by shortstop Emily Slade wound up doubling a runner off third base as well. That played staved off what appeared to be another big inning brewing for us. Poynette used 16 players in the game, down from the normal 18-21 that have been seeing action. "Lakeside is a well-coached outfit," said Tomlinson. "A few miscues today hurt Doyle who did a good job of keeping us off balance, especially after we'd scored 10 in the first two innings. She just hung in there and made some good pitches."

River Valley 10, Richland Center 0
Katie Hoffman tossed another five-inning no-hitter on Thursday as the Blackhawks beat the Hornets in Spring Green. Hoffman struck out nine and walked one and doubled to help her own cause.

Newman carries the load, delivers gem to beat Madison East 1-0
Senior righthander Nicole Newman led the Madison LaFollette Lancers to the win over east-side rival Madison East. State Journal prep writer Dennis Semrau covers the game. Here is a link to his story.

Mineral Point 1, Riverdale 0
Mineral Point’s all state pitcher/hitter Beth Wood was the difference in a couple of ways on Thursday as the Pointers topped the Chieftans 1-0. Wood homered in the first inning and then scattered three hits to record the shutout victory.

Beloit Turner takes down McFarland, 4-0

Kelsie Packard was a key factor when in the circle and while in the batter's box on Thursday as two highly touted and highly ranked Division 2 teams squared off in a non-conference game. Packard scattered just three hits, walked one and fanned 14. The Florida Gulf Coast softball recruit also went 3x4 at the plate off two Spartan pitchers. The two teams could meet again on June 3rd in a sectional semi-final if Turner can hold off Delavan-Darien. McFarland will have to hold off the likes of Edgerton, Edgewood, Evansville, Jefferson, Lake Mills and Watertown Luther Prep to get that far. 

Monroe 2, Stoughton 1
The Cheesemakers, holders of a 17-3 season record nipped a 7-7 Stoughton club on Thursday when Kirsten Vetterli hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to aviod the upset bid by the Vikings. Natalie Dillon picked up the victory in the circle, allowing four hits, two walks and struck out three. Sam Hose went 2x3 for the winners while Liz Auby collected twof of Stoughton's hits off Dillon in a 2x3 game.
