Pitcher Leads Falcons to Division 1 State Title

Sarah Fonk of Westosha Central has been named The 2013 Fastpitch Chronicle Player of the Year for the state of Wisconsin.

Fonk, a senior led the Falcons to successive state tournament appearances in 2012 and 2013, winning the recently completed state tournament 12-1 over Kenosha Bradford. She allowed six hits in the championship game after "officially" missing a no-hitter against Menonomonee Falls in the state semi-final.

She finished the regular season 15-0 this year with a 0.32 ERA, 0.47 WHIP, and 156 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings. Fonk has allowed only 4 earned runs this season and has held her opponents to a .120 batting average.

Fonk had two 5-inning perfect games this season. Her first came against Badger when she collected 10 strikeouts in the 12-0 victory on May 6th. She also tossed a perfect game against Wilmot which included 11 strikeouts in the 10-0 win on May 13th.

To go along with her stellar pitching she also carried a .500 batting average with a .803 slugging percentage while scoring 39 runs and collecting 26 RBI's.

Westosha Central (20-1) was the top-ranked team in Division 1 as they headed to the state tournament.

In the state tournament, Fonk went 3-0. She beat Sun Prairie 6-0, allowing just two hits, walking one and fanning 10. She followed that up with a come-from-behind win over Menomonee Falls. In the first inning Falls' third sacker, Brittany Robinson's base-hit bunt attempt was returned sharply to the pitcher's circle where it bounced off Fonk's glove. Her throw to first was late and Robinson was officially credited with a hit. It was the only hit she allowed. Robinson would move to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt. She then scored on a passed ball for an unearned run. Fonk walked one and fanned a baker's dozen (13). Central scored one in the third and one in the sixth to get the win.

In the title game Fonk was superb again, scattering six hits and limiting Bradford to single, fourth-inning run. She walked one and struck out nine.

Fonk's plans include walking on to the softball program at Wisconsin next fall.
