Menasha nips Spencer in other game 4-3, Spencer looks strong in Division 5 hunt

Poynette hosted Menasha and Spencer in a three-team round robin today at Diamond of Champions in Poynette.

The Pumas took on Menasha in the day’s first game and came away with a 13-3 win as Mattie Bredson scattered six hits, walked one and fanned two while allowing three unearned runs.  This the day after throwing a three at Marshall.

The Pumas scored three in thebottom of the second when the the lower four hitters came up big after there were two outs and nobody aboard. Bredeson reached first on a hard-hit ball to shortstop that gobbled up the fielder a bit and forced her to throw errantly to first where Bredeson was safe and went to second on the bounce off the sideline fence. Allison Tomlinson drew a two-out base on balls as did Mya Knuteson to load the bases. Makayla Sorge then a high-towering blast just to the centerfield side of the scoreboard in the leftfield power alley that the wind knocked down. It was high enough to cause the centerfielder to miss it as it came down while on the dead run. All three Pumas’ runners scored on the blast.

The Pumas added a pair of tallies in the third when Haley Radewan led off with a double off the fence in rightcenter, again into the teeth of a stiff wind. Brooke Dredske moved her along with sacrifice bunt before sophomore utility player Ashley Hellenbrand beat that stiff wind with a line drive that cleared the fence in dead centerfield for a 5-0 lead. In the Pumas fourth Knuteson singledf with opnme down and Sorge followed with a single to left. Knuteson scored on a fielder’s choice up the middle off the bat of Maegan Brookins that retired Sorge at second base.

Menasha scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth after Williams and Ayanna Priestly both singled . Bredeson coaxed a routine roller out of Madeline Brown that rolled under the glove of Brookins playing second base and when Katelyn Sell followed with a single Brown scored the third run.

In the Pumas’ fifth inning Hellenbrand coaxed a base on balls out of Bella Williams in relief of Loren Ludrison and Paige Doherty followed with as single and both runners scored when Bredeson helped her own cause with a triple off the fence in rightcenter. She then scored on a fielder’s choice from Tomlinson.

The Pumas’ recorded an “answer back inning” when Hellenbrand and Doherty had back-to-back walks and Bredeson helped herself again, this time with a single to center that plated two. She scored on Heather Kimberley’s single to left for the 13 run that ended the game.

All in all the Pumas collected 13 runs on nine hits, struck out just twice while drawing four walks.

The win boosted the Poynette record to 6-0 on the season.
