Pepin/Alma wins Dunn/St. Croix Conference title for fourth straight year

They were always the Pepin Lakers, err, the Pepin Lady Lakers but a few years ago they became the Pepin/Alma Eagles. No matter, the girls from there today won two games at two diffferent sites against two different opponents. The two wins, one a suspended game at Elk Mound and a postponed game from yesterday in Glenwood City give the Eagle a fourth consecutive conference title. All four have come under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Bellerive. Today the Eagles first traveled up to Elk Mound to finish a game that made it to the fourth inning before weather forced suspension. Leading 6-3 at that point of suspension the Eagles plated a run to make it 7-3. Neither team scored until the top of the seventh when some bunt strategy (some refer to this as small ball but that moniker never gets used by this writer) caused some defensive issues and before the inning was over, seven Pepin/Alma players had scored. The final was 14-3. From Elk Mound the Eagles boarded the bus and headed to Glenwood City where they took that team down 19-3. Then word out of Elk Mound indicated that Colfax had bumped off the Mounders giving the Eagles the conference championship. It's the 17th Conference Championship in Pepin softball history. It would be safe to assume that some of them stopped at third base which is the last stop before home.

Bruce wins East Lakeland Conference title today - record is now 9-0 due to weather outs games all season long.

Preble gets come-from-behind win over Shawano

At Shawano, the Hawks built a 4-1 lead through five innings but Preble fought back to tie on Kaylee Francois’ sacrifice fly in the 7th inning.  Kaylen Krueger’s 9th inning home run sparked Preble’s winning rally.  Anna Conard earned the victory for Preble, allowing nine hits and striking out five.  Courtney Baumann allowed 11 hits and struck out three for Shawano. Baumann, Saige Henning, and Courtney Ainsworth had two hits apiece for the Hawks.

Westosha Central 10, Burlington 0
Westosha Central used an eight-run sixth inning to break open a close game and defeat Burlington 10-0 in Paddock Lake.  Alyssa Hrncar earned the win going the distance.  She allowed five hits and struck out five.  The Falcons jumped to an early lead in the first when Hrncar singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a Kayla Konwent single.  They added a run in the second on a Kira Mickelson double and Hrncar single.  That is where the game stayed until the sixth.  In the top of the 6th, the Demons loaded the bases (on three singles by Onstad, Lewis and Koenen) with no one out.  Taylor Bergles caught a foul pop at the fence for the first out.  Hrncar then struck out Wieners and induced Tenhagen to ground out to end the threat.  “That was a crucial moment in the game.  They had something going there.  But like they’ve done all year, Alyssa bore down and the defense tightened up.  It was like a playoff situation out there and the girls responded very well.”  (co head coach Tom Lampe)  With the threat subdued, the Falcon offense went to work on Burlington pitcher Danielle Koenen.  Back to back one out doubles by Brooke Biedrzycki and Julia Jester added a run.  Bergles then tripled in Jester with two out.  Hits buy Hailey Jester, Haley Spoerl, and Kira Mickelson added to the lead.  Biedrzycki ended the game with a two out single that scored Mickelson with the 10th and final run.  “It was a much closer game than the score indicated.  It was a game of adjustments.  But when Julia plated Brooke we just settled in and never stopped hitting.  That’s what they are capable of doing.”  (co head coach Tom Lampe)  With the win the Falcons finish their Southern Lakes Conference schedule  a perfect 14-0 while overall they are 20-3.  They return to action tomorrow when they host Kenosha Tremper in their final regular season home game at 4:00.

Union Grove 15, Elkhorn 0

The Broncos continued to hit the ball hard tonight batting around in the first inning and plating 6 runs in the first inning.  They added a solo shot to center in the second off the bat of Cassidy Kortendick.  They plated 4 more in the 3rd on a bases loaded single with a 2 base error and a double to follow. They would cap the scoring with a grandslam from nine hitter Becca Moore to straight away centerfield.  Moore had herself a night at the plate as she was 3 for 3 with 7 RBI's (sorry I couldn't get the iscore to cancel the final RBI on her bases clearing single.  The first two runs would have scored regardless but the third would not have without the error).  To go with the sticks the Broncos got great pitching and defense as Sophomores Allie Trudeau and Alyssa McClelland combined on a no-hitter in the 5 inning game.

Freedom takes two from Fox Valley Lutheran

5-0 and then 3-2 in 9 innings.

Freedom is EVC Champion and FVL takes 2nd place. Freedom is the #1 seed and FVL is the #2 seed.
