Meford
Head Coach
- Virgil Berndt 24 yrs 270 wins
Key losses: Kylie Christianson 1B, Tori Walsh C, and Sadie Dassow P
Key returners: Justin Sova SS, Shealyn Strebig OF, Kayla Hartl P, Marissa Laher OF, Alyssa Loertscher 3B. Jenice Claustnitzer 2B, Sydney Elsner P

I would think defending champs, Mosinee, would be the frontrunner in the conference race.

I think Medford will have a good mix of experience and youth. Should be competitive by the end of the season if we get some time on a diamond.

Theme for 2014:  “Live to Win”
Tomahawk Team Goals for 2014:

1.       To play as a TEAM.

2.       To give 100% each day at practice.

3.       To improve each day you step out on to the field, in practice and on game day.

4.       To represent our family, community, and school to the best of our abilities.

5.       To win conference, regional, sectional and state titles.

KEYS TO MAINTAINING AND INCREASING OUR LEVEL OF SUCCESS:  ENTHUSIASM-COMPETITIVENESS-INTENSITY

The Lady Hatchet softball program looks to be competitive each day in practice and in games.  If we can improve every time we step out on to the field we will be where we need to be at tournament time.  Like any team we will need to stay healthy and have our young, inexperienced players grow up fast. The Hatchets have a good nucleus of veteran players returning who will provide a tremendous amount of leadership during the season.

Conference outlook—

The Great Northern Conference will be as competitive as ever in 2014.  Mosinee is the early season favorite.  They have solid athletes and always reload; they have great team speed and are very well coached.  The Hatchets as always expect to be in the hunt at the end.  The remaining contingent of the GNC will be competitive.  If you don’t come ready to play each game you will get beat as we experienced firsthand in regionals last season.  It will be another exciting year in the GNC.

Numbers are solid, we are able to support three teams!  Three teams are no longer the norm, only one other conference school (Mosinee) has three teams. Seniors – 5; Juniors – 8; Sophomores – 8’; Freshman - 11

Strengths—Attitude, Leadership, Work Ethic, Pitching, Hitting, Ability to play small ball, Solid defense, Coachable players, Enthusiasm, Players that want more

What do you like best about your team?

This year’s team will be similar in its make-up as last year.  It will have a little of everything.  It will consist of some experienced veterans who will provide a vast amount of varsity experience and great leadership.  It has a group of role players from last year’s team that will step up and contribute on an every game basis.  Last, there is the few that will be varsity newcomers and will need to grow up fast to play a big role in the season.  All members of the team are very coachable and have enthusiasm for the game.  The Hatchets work very hard and put “TEAM” needs above all else.  They are fundamentally sound and have fun playing softball.  The X factor for this year’s squad is that several of them bought into our off season weight training, speed and agility program that made them overall better ATHLETES!!!  They are no longer just participants!

How about the team’s attitude?

The 2014 Lady Hatchet’s attitude is outstanding, especially considering the weather and the amount of time we will have to be inside!!!!

Northland Pines:

Head Coach - Mike Cox 2nd yr 8 wins

Lost most of our experience last year due to graduation. We hope our younger players this year can compete with the other teams in our conference. We all know that Mosinee will be always really good while Antigo, Medford and Tomahawk will be tough. Then you got us and Lakeland trying to give the other teams a tough time.

As for us we should be a little better defensively and we must get better offensively or we won’t give the other teams a game. Our pitching will struggle but the girls will try their hardest.

Antigo
Head Coach - Sandi Robrecht 3rd yr 18 wins

Key players lost to graduation , Taylor Tatro & Zoe Kapusta

Key players returning and perhaps key newcomers for 2014. Kendall Nagel, Kara Wilhelm, Britney Wald

Conference predictions? Mosinee, Rhinelander, Medford/Antigo, Tomahawk, Lakeland, Northland Pines
