beats Lake Mills 14-4 while Columbus was losing to Lakeside Lutheran

For the 25th time in Poynette High School Softball Program history, the local diamond gems have won the conference title.
The Pumas won their 18th game of the season today with a 14-4 victory over a much improved Lake Mills softball program. The win today coupled with the upset victory by Lakeside Lutheran over Columbus means that the Pumas are undisputed Capitol North Division Conference Champions.
This year's title did not come easy. In a spring season that was rocked with crazy weather, lots of cancellations and postponements the young team kept improving.
Today the Pumas got great results from the entire team as all 17 players once again were able to get into the game in one way or another. They collected 14 hits, one double by Casey Fountain., a triple by Molly Anderson and towering home run off the bat of Ashley Hellenbrand The other 11 safeties were singles but most were clobbered.

"Tonight's game was closer than a ten-run differential appears to be," said the Poynette coach. "We fell behind after Lake Mills freshman pitcher Taylor Roughen belted a two-run homer in the second.  Hellenbrand hit an 0-2 offering high over the flagpole in leftcenter to get the Pumas on the board and after a groundout got a single from Brianna Schulz followed by a pair of base on balls and when  Fountain took a hit to the leg and the bases were FOP (Full of Pumas).  Fountain then lined a double to plate two and a fielder's choice off the bat of Lizzie Schwenn plated the fourth run of the inning. The Pumas would never trail again but were threatened as Lake Mills, after there were two up and two down in the fourth managed four safe hits that found holes just out of reach of Puma defenders and scored two runs making the score 6-4.
"One of our codes is Never Panic, it leads to Rush," said the head coach. "These kids just dug in and "answered back" as they have throughout the season."
The Pumas got one in the bottom of the fourth and when Schwenn had a well placed single to short left they scored one in the fifth. "It was great to see Lizzie get that key single at that point," said the longtime coach.
A six run sixth ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Columbus fell two games behind the Pumas and still must play Lake Mills on Friday.
Brianna Kowald was 3x4, Casey Fountain was 2x3, Ashley Hellenbrand was 2x4 and Schulz was 2x3 to pace the hit parade today.
The winning pitcher was Casey Fountain in relief of Mattie Bredeson in the second inning.

The Pumas are now 18-1 and have completed the regular season save for a suspended game with Columbus that is entering the 10th inning with the score knotted at 2-2. That game is set to resume Monday in Poynette.

Poynette will be the #1 seed in the half sectional and will also host the sectional final at Diamond of Champions.
