Chequamegon Results from Gilman/Thorp Slamfest on Saturday

Top-ranked Pacelli pounced on the Chequamegon High School softball team for 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 20-9 victory at the Gilman/Thorp SlamFest on Saturday, May 12.

Chequamegon lost 4-3 to Stratford in its second game at SlamFest. Both games were played at Thorp High School.

The Screaming Eagles, 11-4 on the season, earned the No. 2 seed in their WIAA Div. 4 sectional half-bracket and will open WIAA tournament play at home on Wednesday, May 23, against seventh-seeded Shell Lake.

Grantsburg earned the No. 1 seed. Ninth-seeded Unity will play eighth-seeded Frederic/Luck on Tuesday, May 24, with the winner moving on to play at Grantsburg on May 25. Other games on May Wednesday have sixth-seeded Clayton/Turtle Lake at third-seeded Cornell/Lake Holcombe and fifth-seeded Chetek-Weyerhauser at fourth-seeded Phillips.

Pacelli, 15-0 and ranked No. 1 in Div. 4 in the WisSports.net/Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll, entered play at SlamFest on Saturday having allowed just 26 runs in 13 games. Chequamegon cut into the Cardinals' 10-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the third.

Hannah Borne led off the bottom of the second with a triple and Kayla Herbst followed with a walk. Miranda Dane singled home a run and Josi Orr followed with an RBI double. Borne blasted a solo home run in the third to make it 10-3.

Pacelli scored four times in the fourth and once in the fifth to lead 15-3. The Screaming Eagles answered with three in the bottom of the fifth. Kayla Herbst hit a two-run double and Orr followed later with an RBI single.

Pacelli tacked on five in top of the sixth and the Screaming Eagles answered with three in the bottom of the inning as the time limit expired. Korrie Herbst, Mackenzie Dane, Borne and Kayla Herbst had consecutive singles in the sixth.

Borne was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two driven in. Kayla Herbst was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Orr was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Mackenzie Dane's two triples and Orr's two singles accounted for four of Chequamegon's six hits against Stratford, which scored three unearned runs. Dane tripled in the first and scored on Borne's RBI single.

The Tigers scored two unearned runs in the third and added a tally in the fifth for a 3-1 lead. Korrie Herbst singled and scored on Dane's second triple in the sixth. Dane then scored the tying run. Stratford plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

Eva Pasewald fanned four over the first three innings and allowed no earned runs. Mackenzie Dane pitched the final three frames, fanning five and allowing one earned run.
