Casey Fountain goes 3x3, and two pitchers shared a shutout

Poynette - Marathon took a road trip the day after their Prom (rescheduled for last night after being postponed due to that 20" snow storm last Saturday night) and landed here for a game against the Pumas.  It was the first time Marathon had been on a dirt infield during the first six weeks of the season.

Marathon got things rolling right away when the leadoff batter (Horning) was hit by a pitch. Her sister then took an 0-1 offering from Mattie Bredeson deep to the base of the fence in leftcenter. When Poynette pitcher Mattie Bredeson uncorked a wild pitch Pumas' catcher Lizzie Schwenn was on the ball quickly and deftly made a great peg to the plate and Bredeson who retired the leadoff batter on the play. Bredeson then settled in and fanned Koldanski and Mohr to get out of the inning unscathed.

Poynette's Casey Fountain doubled with one out in the bottom of the first but was stranded when Mara Millard went down on a grounder to second and Ashley Hellenbrand went down swinging on a high, hard one from Horning.

Bredeson fanned the side on 12 pitches in the Marathon second and the Pumas answered that feat with five runs in the second. Rightfielder Molly Anderson singled sharply to rightcenter and Schwenn followed suit with a liner to the same spot. Senior first sacker Mikayla Sorge coaxed a base on balls from Horning that loaded the bases and Bredeson helped herself out with a two-strike, two-run double. After a popped up bunt Brianna Kowald doubled and Fountain laced yet another two-strike, two-run double. Horning got of further trouble by fanning Mara Millard.

With two outs and nobody aboard Schwenn laced another Horning offering to rightcenter and after back-to-back walks to Sorge and Bredeson, three wild pitches sent all three runners home. The score was then 8-0.

In the Pumas' fourth Kowald doubled again and Fountain hit a soft roller in front of home plate that she beat out for her third hit of the game. Brianna Schulz then batted in Millards's spot and knocked a two-strike single to rightcenter for two rbi.

Bredeson sandwiched a pair of singles between a pair of strikeouts and then fanned Sweno to end the fourth. She gave way to Ashley Hellenbrand in the fifth who faced three batters and fanned two of them.

"We moved the ball well today and our pitching was on top of things again," said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson. "A special thanks goes out to the fellas that got all that snow off both fields twice this week. Brian Kowald, Bob Latour, Ron Millard and Dan Hellenbrand were amazing. Dan especially with his Bobcat."
