Mattie Bredeson and Casey Fountain combine on no-hitter, Bri Kowald goes 3x4

Some say that pitching is 90% of the formula in fastpitch softball and the Poynette pitching staff proved that today in Lodi as senior Mattie Bredeson and sophomore Casey Fountain combined on a no-hitter and fanned a dozen in the five inning, run-rule shortened game. Bredeson struck out the side in the first, fanned two in the second, whiffed all three she faced in the third and struck out one in the fourth before Fountain took over. The sophomore fanned Jaden Kolinski to end the fourth and struck out two in the fifth.

THe Pumas got things rolling instantly in the top of the first when sophomore second sacker Brianna Kowald laced a liner to center that took a hop and got past the centerfielder. The fleet-footed sophomore circled the bases. Fountain then doubled to left before Brianna Schulz drew a base on balls. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Ashley Hellenbrand sent Fountain to the plate with a sacrifice fly to deep center. After a fly out to left, Mara Millard singled to left driving in Schulz and when Mikayla Sorge lined a double to the fence in leftcenter  the game was broken wide open. Bredeson doubled (because she stumbled between first and second) and Lucy Cuff, running for Bredeson scored on Kowald's second single of the inning. The score was then 6-0.

In the second the Pumas plated a run when Hellenbrand drew a base on balls and Molly Anderson singled sharply to left. A double steal put runners on two and three and when Millard hit a towering fly ball to center Hellenbrand scored easily.  A four-run third highlighted by Kowald's double, her third hit of the game and Millard's third rbi on a single up the middle.

The losing pitcher was Olivia Wendt who pitched the first three innings. She was relieved by Jaden Kolinski who held off the Pumas in the fourth and fifth. Bredeson was credited with the win.

Kowald was 3x4 with a double while Millard was 2x2 with three rbi. Hellenbrand had two rbi and tied a school record with two sacrifice flyballs in the same game. "That's only happened one other time in 39 years of Poynette High School Softball,"said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson.

After the game the coach had some thoughts. "We have always been tough in the circle and hard to score on and we've had some great hitting squads at the same time we had great pitching. This team has four bonafide varsity level pitchers and a dugout full of girls who can flat out hit. We moved the ball against good SPASH pitching on Tuesday and struck out just three times. Today we hit some missiles that got out of the infield in a hurry."

The Pumas are now 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Capitol North. Their next game is scheduled for Monday in Lake Delton where they will take on Wisconsin Dells. Game time is 5:00 PM.
