Lakeside Lutheran tops Belleville 17-10

The SPASH Panthers traveled to Poynette today and left town with their third victory of the season, this one an 11-1 win over the Pumas. It was the season opener for Poynette after having six games cancelled last week.

SPASH got things going in the top of the first when Ally Miklesh led off with a liner off the glove of third sacker Ashley Helllenbrand. After the hard single, Miklesh stole second base. That’s where things got dicey for the Pumas. Megan Miklesh hit a roller to second that sent Ally Miklesh to third but the throw to first was wide of the mark and by the time the play was over Miklesh was at third. When Sam Saloun hit a grounder to  shortstop Casey Fountain a heady play by the sophomore shortstop caught Miklesh in a rundown between third and home. When catcher Zoie Ramberg’s throw arrived in the glove Hellenbrand, Miklesh’s hard dive into her jarred the ball lose. Miklesh was ruled safe by the base ump.

I’ve watched thousands and thousands of games in my lifetime and I’d never seen a play like that,” said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson. Miklesh never hit the dirt on that dive until after the collision between her and Ashley on the home plate side of the bag at third. I have always felt that sliding involves being on the dirt and not in mid-air.”

When Hallie Pavelski lined a Mattie Bredeson to the fence in rightcenter Miklesh and Sam Saloun who had been safe on the fielder’s choice both scored.  Maddie Frank then hit a routine pop fly to right but that ball was also dropped sending Pavelski home with yet another unearned run. When Frank who had made it to second on the dropped ball broke for third on a sharp grounder to short off the bat of pitcher Andrea Cherney’s bat, Fountain’s second heady play of the inning retired Frank as she ran right into Fountain’s tag. All-in-all the Panthers had taken a 4-0 lead before an out had been recorded.

The Panthers scored one more in the third wen Pavelski doubled to the same spot and scored on an rbi single by Frank, her second of three hits on the day. Ally Miklesh singled in the fourth, stole second and scored on an rbi single by Saloun. Then in the sixth the Panthers drew two walks off Poynette pitcher Mattie Bredeson and had a double in between by Megan Miklesh. Frank then took 1-1 pitch over the leftcenter field fence for a grand slam to make it 11-1.

The Pumas had scored one run in the third when senior first sacker MiKayla Sorge singled and later scored.

Ally Frank went 4x4 with a base on balls, Pavelski had two doubles, and Frank went 3x4 with five rbi for SPASH. Brianna Schulz, Aubri Kitson and Sorge had the three hits for Poynette.

The winner was Cherney who pitched four innings, allowed one unearned run on one hit, walked two and fanned one. Frank pitched the final three innings allowing one hit and fanning six.

The Panthers may play Wisconsin Rapids in Poynette on Thursday while the Pumas travel to Lodi to open Capitol Conference North action against their longtime rival.

Meanwhile elsewhere in the Capitol Conference Lakeside Lutheran outslugged Belleville 17-10 in a cross over game that does not count on either team's conference record although they are both members of the Capitol Conference. The game featured 29 hits and 9 errors as well as 11 walks. Shannon Jones and Meghan Splinter each had four hits for Lakeside Lutheran while Maddie Webber had three safeties for Belleville.
