Laconia, Chequamegon, Columbus, Poynette all win

Winneconne's Annika Gereau pitched seven innings, but providing enough offense to notch a victory proved difficult Friday, as Winneconne fell to Laconia 1-0 at Winneconne High School.  Kayla Schwebke got the win for Laconia. She pitched seven shutout innings. Schwebke struck out 14, walked none and gave up two hits. Kylee Whitford and Taylor Wilke each accounted for Winneconne's two hits.

Chequamegon 12, @ Rib Lake 2 (6)

Mackenzie Dane allowed just one hit with no walks and seven strikeouts over five innings in a 12-2 Chequamegon victory at Rib Lake on Friday, April 22. Kayla Herbst was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Emily Ernest was 2-for-3 with a double and four runs batted in. Dane had two of Chequamegon's 11 hits.

Columbus 16, Lakeside Lutheran 1

Columbus scored early and kept rolling throughout the game. In the first inning, Lauren Kirchberg doubled and was driven in on a single by Taylor Witthun. In the second inning, three consecutive singles plated a run and then Maria Wedig hit her first career homerun, a 3-run dinger to right field. Later in the inning Lydia Brockel drove in a run with a single making the score 6-0. In the fourth, Kirchberg hit another double and scored on a single by Megan Wiersma. Weirsma scored with two out on a misplayed fly ball. Columbus took a commanding lead with an 8-run sixth inning, highlighted by Taylor Witthun's 3-run homer to left. Several Cardinal hitters had multiple hits, including Kirchberg (5x5), Wiersma (3x5), Wedig, (2x4), Morgan Casper (2x4), and Witthun (2x5). Pitcher Brianna Farrington went all six innings, holding the Warriors to 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 12.

The Pumas jumped out to an insurmountable 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore pitcher Mattie Bredeson was counting coup. She controlled the plate and the zone throughout. Paige Doherty twirled the final inning, allowing one unearned run, walked two and fanned none. She was snake-bitten by a pair of Pumas’ errors in the fifth inning.

The Pumas got a 2x3 night from senior Abby Neabling who doubled off the fence twice. Haley Radewan was 2x2 with six total bases and three rbi. Ten other Pumas players collected one hit each. Freshman Ashley Hellenbrand doubled high off the fence in center in her first-ever varsity at bat. Maegan Brookins also doubled off the fence for the Pumas.

“We moved the ball high and hard today,” said Poynette Head Coach Bob Tomlinson. “My dad and the Splendid Splinter would have enjoyed the hitting in Poynette today."  

Poynette moves to 7-2 overall and 7-0  in conference action.. They host Nekoosa on Saturday the 23rd at 11:00 am and travel to Columbus on Tuesday for a key Capitol North Conference matchup.
