Elkhorn 4, Waterford 3 -  4/12/16

Elkhorn starts the season bringing new head coach Steve Remington a victory.

The home opener was a festive event with free hot dogs, chips, cup cakes and brownies for all fans and players.   Elkhorn junior Bekah Trussler sang the National Anthem and Elkhorn scored a walk off victory.

It was a back-and-forth affair against Waterford, ending in a 4-3 win on Tuesday at Sunset Park in Elkhorn.

The winning run scored on a bases loaded RBI single by Morgan Rudolf.

Rachel Gosh got a hit in each of her four at bats. Hitting a home run to deep left center on the first pitch of the bottom half of the first inning.  She followed this up with singles in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.

Carolyn Griswold's 10 strikeouts in a complete game effort helped Elkhorn to the victory. Griswold allowed one earned run, seven hits and two walks.

Hailey Wang added 3 hits and and RBI, while Emily Partington plated an RBI with her only hit of the day.

Elkhorn had 3 errors, but did show off the glove on a fine relay from center fielder Anna Bechtel to  2nd baseman Hailey Wang to Emily Brahm at third to cut down a Waterford baserunner trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Delavan-Darien 3, Elhorn 0 – 4/14/16

Elkhorn fell to Delavan-Darien 3-0 at West Park in Darien in a well-played error free game.  Jennah Speth got the win for Delavan- Darien.

Elkhorn just couldn't get the bats going, managing just two hits.  They backed Taryn Ickes on the mound putting together a good fielding game.

Taryn pitched a complete game, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits, walking none.  Hailey Wang tracked down 6 fly balls in centerfield, and teamed up with Mackenzie Shawback and Rachel Gosh to gun down a Delavan runner trying to advance to second on a throw to the plate.  (CF to C back to the SS at 2nd base).

Sarah Rychlak came off the bench in the top of the seventh and singled with two outs, but Elkhorn couldn't quite put together a rally.

The loss evens Elkhorn's record at 1-1 as they prepare for 3 games this Saturday in Kettle Morraine.

Kettle Morraine Quad

Game 1:  Kettle Morraine 16, Elkhorn 5 – 4/16/16

In the first game played at Kettle Morraines new varsity field Kettle Morraine gathered a win despite a big day at the dish from Elkhorn Freshman Laine Rudolf.  Rudolf finished 2-2 with a grand slam in her first game as a starter.

Rudolf accounted for both of Elhkorn's hits as the rest of the team just couldn't figure out the Kettle Morraine pitcher. Her grand slam was set up by consecutive walks of Hailey Wang, Mackenzie Shawback and Carolyn Griswold.

Elkhorn's youth showed as 5 errors contributed to 10 unearned runs in an 11 run 3rd inning.

Game2:  Divine Savior Holy Angels 9, Elkhorn 5 – 4/16/16

In the second game of the day at Kettle Morraine Elkhorn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA).   Rachel Gosh was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, advanced to second on a groundout by Hailey Wang and scored on a base hit by Mackenzie Shawback.

DSHA  put 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the first.  After the first inning Elkhorn committed 6 errors helping DSHA build an 8 to 1 lead going into the top of the 5th.  In the top of the 5th inning, Elkhorn cut into the lead with some great baserunning.  First Emily Brahm was alert and scooted home on a passed ball, and on that same play Sarah Rychlak moved over to 3rd.  Then with Sarah Krupp batting, Rachel Gosh stole second drawing a throw and Rychlak stole home.

DSHA added one more run in the 6th and Elkhorn tried to mount a rally in the top of the 7th.  Sarah Bechtel was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Rachel Gosh walked.  After Sarah Krupp lined out to right, Shawback moved the runners over on a grounder to the pitcher.  Carolyn Griswold followed with a base hit to right field that scored Bechtel and Gosh.  However that is where the rally ended.  Laine Rudolf put the ball in play but grounded out to end the game.

Game 3:  Kenosha Indian Trail 2, Elkhorn 1 – 4/16/16

In the final game of the day at Kettle Morraine, Elkhorn failed to provide enough offense to beat Kenosha Indian Trail despite Rachel Gosh's six-inning stellar performance, and Elkhorn took the loss, 2-1.

Elkhorn did settle down from the previous two games with only one error in the game.   They were also able to generate 10 base runners, but despite hitting well, were only able to get one run across.

That run came after Gosh worked her way out of a jam in the bottom of the 5th inning.  After a lead-off triple, Gosh induced back to back ground outs to Carolyn Griswold at 3rd base and a soft fly ball to Hailey Wang at SS to end the inning with the runner still standing at 3rd.

In the top of the 6th Elkhorn rallied to tie the game when Sarah Bechtel walked with one out, Laine Rudolf grounded into a fielders choice that put her a first.  Sarah Krupp pinch ran for Rudolf and Elkhorn got back to back two out hits by Carolyn Griswold and Whitney Salamone, with Salamone driving in Krupp from 2nd.

Unfortunately Elkhorn gave back a run in the bottom of the sixth on Kendyl Shine’s 2nd RBI triple of the day and weren't able to claw back.  In the top of the 7th, Wang walked and stole second with 2 outs but the game ended on a ground out to short.
