Westosha 1 R, 3 H, 2 E
Union Grove 6 R, 10 H, 0 E
Westosha by inning 1 in the 6th
UG by inning 1 in 2nd, 2 in 4th, 2 in 5th, 1 in 6th
UG and Westosha matched up in an early season duel of two fantastic programs. As with any good teams these games often come down to who gets the timely hits and who can avoid making any costly mistakes. Over the past several matchups Westosha Central has been the team that got the better end of it but tonight UG flipped the scripts a bit and got a bunch of timely hits combined with a fabulous pitching performance from Brittany Moore to claim the victory.
UG got the scoring started in the 2nd with a 2 out solo homerun to center from Junior Brooklyn Ottelien making UG's first hit of the day a big one. UG would add to their lead in the 4th on a 2 out, 2 RBI double off the bat of Sophomore Taylor Clark who also made a terrific diving grab to take a hit away from Westosha the inning before to push it to 3-0. The Broncos would continue their 2 out ways in the 5th as a one out error and a single put a runner into scoring position. On the following single to right Westosha's right fielder Jenna Kontaxis made an absolute gem of a throw to Konwent at home to complete the bang bang play at home to cut down the UG runner. Union Grove, however, would get another ball to fall in to right allowing 2 runs to score to make it 5-0. In the top of the sixth Westosha got a 1 out walk by Konwent and a PB and WP to move her to third then got a 2 out single to left from Kira Michelson to plate Konwent to make the game 5-1. Union Grove would complete their scoring in the bottom half of the sixth on a single and a hit and run that would find a hole allowing the runner to score as the throw to third would skip away from the Westosha fielder allowing Brittany Moore to score for UG's sixth and final run.
In the battle of two outstanding high school pitchers Moore came out on top giving up 3 hits, walking three while striking out 14 against Westosha's powerhouse lineup.
"Brittany Moore was really good tonight," said Co-Head Coach Tom Lampe of Westosha Central. "She kept us off balance all game long. She did a great job of painting the corners and she kept us guessing all night."
"Add to that the fact that they got some key two-out hits throughout the game," Lampe added. "That was the theme for the day, two out key hits by them. Those really can energize a team and deflate the other. It was tough to try to overcome for us."
In a game between of the state's stalwarts Lampe had great praise for the Broncos. " "You're not going to win too many games that you get only three hits and strike out that many times. We know that and I expect us to adjust and fix the issue. There's a lot of season to go, but give them credit. They were the better team tonight."
The loss drops the Falcons to 2-1 in the Southern Lakes Conference and overall. They return to action on Saturday when they face Racine Case in the first game of the Western Kenosha County Invitation at Westosha Central.
