11 hit attack, another Blochwitz shutout

Boscobel, WI - After retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning, Poynette's Jordan Blochwitz found herself suddenly staked to a 5-0 lead after the Pumas scored that many in the bottom of the inning. The inning was highlighted by a leadoff single by Jordyn Mackey, a sharp single to left by Shelby Wheeler, a walk to Brooke Dredske that loaded the bases. After an infield fly righfielder Dani Treinen singled to left to score two runs and when sophomore infielder Haley Radewan hit a towering homer over the fence in left the Pumas were looking good.

In the second inning the Pumas added yet a sixth run when one of the strangest doubles anyone has ever seen took place. Mackey led off the inning. On the first pitch from Cuban pitcher Emily Wilderholt Mackey, noticing the infield placement, hit a soft blooper toward the third base line. with the the third sacker playing very tight to the plate the ball had nothing but infield dirt to fall to. However as the ball hooked toward the line and appeared to be going foul things changed. As the ball neared the surface of the playing field it nicked the inside front corner of the third base itself. It carromed past third base coach Bob Tomlinson and into the third base bench area which has no gate. Mackey would have had a double regardless as the second sacker had gone to cover first on the slap while the shortstop moved to the ball.

"It was certainly one of the most strange doubles I've ever witnessed," said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson.

Wheeler then moved Mackey to third on a bunt and close play at first and when Brooke Dredske single to short leftcenter Mackey scored easily making it 6-0/

"I've never seen a double like that," said Cuba City coach Steve Kaiser. "I guess you know it's not going to be your day, down 5-0 and a play that takes place."

Poynette added four more runs in the bottom of  the third when Emily Cibulka singled and Radewan hit a liner to center for a single. When Jenna Sandstrom was struck by a Wilderholt pitch the bases were loaded. Blochwitz worked the count to full before taking a low offering for a called third strike. Mackey hit into a fielder's choice that retired courtesy runner Brea Falstad and Wheeler followed with a base-clearing double to the fence right down the leftfield line. When Dredske doubled Wheeler scored the tenth run.

Blochwitz was having her way with the Cubans as she limited them to five hits, two of which came in the top of the fourth but were erased on an inning ending double play on flair hit to third and a tag of third. Blochwitz fanned five and walked none.

The Pumas moved to 28-1 on the season and have now qualified for their eighth state tournament appearance. The sectional final was the 14th time Poynette has played at that level of competition.

They will now play Lomira who beat Chilton.
