Poynette's Blochwitz twirls another shutout

Pumas get two runs without a hit but take three pitches to the body and walk three times

The Poynette softball team nipped host Portage this morning 2-0 on two unearned runs but that was all pitcher Jordan Blochwitz would need as she held the Warriors at bay, scattering four hits and walking just two.

Portage pitcher Megan Witt held off the bats from Poynette but a wild pitch with a runner at third plated Poynette's first run and a poorly thrown ball from shortstop to first with a runner at second cost Witt another run. The freshman allowed just one hit, a fourth inning double to Brooke Dredske but walked three and hit three batters (those were the sixth, seventh and eighth time that Poynette had been hit by pitches in the past two games).

In the Pumas' second first sacker Riley Barnharst took a hard Witt offering right between the shoulder blades leading off the inning. When Witt issued a base on balls to catcher Emily Cibulka the Pumas had runners at one and two. A passed ball moved Barnharst to second and Cibulka swiped second base on the next pitch to Amber Breuch who had then worked an 0-2 count to full and had fouled off two Witt offerings. The next pitch nearly hit Breuch in the head which would have loaded the bases (and probably caused Breuch to see stars) but the senior just got out of the way allowing the ball to get back to the screen and Barnharst beat the throw to the plate.

In the Warrior fourth Blochwitz uncustomarily walked the first batter of the inning who happened to be Witt. However, the Poynette ace fanned Alli Walker then fanned Emily Kirby before issuing another walk, this one to Katelyn Neal. With runners on one and two Blochwitz worked the count and on 2-2 got Lindsey Harvey to watch a strike sail past for strike three.

In the Poynette fifth it was again a hit batter that got things going. Witt had retired Mya Knuteson for the first out and got Jordyn Mackey out on a nice play by the Warrior shortstop, Harvey on a slapped blooper into short leftfield. On the first pitch to Shelby Wheeler, Witt drilled her in the rib cage sending her to first base on a free pass. After shaking off that pain, Wheeler swiped second base and got drilled in the back by the throw from the catcher. On the first pitch to Dredske the sophomore slugger lined a bouncer to Harvey at short but her throw drew Walker off the bag and the ball scooted past allowing Wheeler to score the second run.

Portage never threatened again but Poynette did, leaving Dani Trienen who also absored the sting of a Witt offering in the back to reach first then steal second and third base before Witt got out of the jam.

Karli D-Asto had two singles for the Warriors while Dredske had the only hit for Poynette.

The Pumas play five games next week to wrap up the regular season.
