Elkhorn Week in Recap:  The Elks started the week hosting Badger in Lake Geneva, since the Elkhorn fields weren’t quite ready yet.  New fences, dugout and infields are being put in at Sunset Park to give the girls a better field.

At Lake Geneva the Elks fell behind early after a solo HR in the top of the first.  The Elks came back in the bottom of the inning with 4 runs and never looked back on their way to a 13-3, 5 inning win.   Juniors Bailey LeDonne and Hailey Wang both belted two run home runs in the game; and the Elks remained aggressive on the bases, with 4 stolen bases on the game.  Junior Carolyn Griswold was in the circle, scattering 4 hits, while striking out 7 and giving up no walks on the way to her 2nd win of the season.

The next night freshman Rachel Gosh took the ball and pitched well enough for the win but the Elkhorn bats were finding holes, however, not runs.  Elkhorn out hit Waterford 9 to 4, but Waterford put together 4 runs through some untimely walks and 3 Elkhorn errors.  Rachel accounted for the only run, leading off the game with a single, advancing to second on a groundout, then stealing third and coming home when the throw got away into the left field corner.  Rachel and Bailey LeDonne both had 2 hit games. On the mound Rachel pitched 3-2/3 innings giving up 4 hits, 4 runs (1 earned), striking out 3 and walking 3.  Carolyn Griswold entered in the 4th inning with a runner on 1st and 2 outs.  She promptly walked the first two batters before getting a fly out to Senior Jasmine Bogart-Falbo in right.  She finished with no hits, 1 strikeout and the two walks on the night.

On Thursday Elkhorn traveled to Darien to face Delavan-Darien.  Carolyn Griswold was back in the circle facing off with Jenna Speth.  Carolyn struggled to find her groove early in the game and the Elkhorn gloves looked a little rusty with 5 errors.  Delavan picked up 2 runs in the 1st and 2nd inning followed by a single run in the third, as Elkhorn fell behind 5 to 0.   Elkhorn got on the board in the top of the 4th with two runs.  Rachel Gosh lead off with a double and moved to third on a single by sophomore Amy Kolacke.  Gosh scored and Kolacke moved to third on a deep sacrifice fly to center off the bat of senior catcher Meghan Etten.  Kolacke then scored on a ball that got by the catcher.  Elkhorn gave up another run in the bottom of the 5th.  They got that run back in the top of the 6th when Amy Kolacke got her second base hit of the game, was advanced to 2nd on a ground out and scored on a single by Etten.  Elkhorn had two on with no outs in the top of the 7th but fell just a bit short of the comeback in a 6-3 loss.  For Delavan, Jenna Speth pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits, 6 K’s and 3 BB’s for the win.  For Elkhorn, Carolyn Griswold took the loss pitching 6 innings, giving up 9 hits, 3 K’s and 3 BB’s.

Elkhorn finished the week in a triangular with Pewaukee and Catholic Memorial.  In the opening game, the Elks shut down Pewaukee 11-0.   Pewaukee won the coin toss and was the home team.  Elkhorn came out swinging and put two runs on the board in the first.  Griswold had a good day in the circle, striking out the side in the first and going on to give up 1 hit, totaling 5 strike outs and walking 1 in the 5 inning game.  The offense continued to click with all 9 starters recording hits, led by Hailey Wang with 3 hits and 2 RBI’s.  Rachel Gosh and Jasmine Bogart-Falbo also drove in a pair each.   In the second inning senior center fielder Abbie Kolacke charged a hard ground ball from Van Altena from Pewaukee and made a quick throw to first to keep the first two innings perfect.

In the second game Catholic Memorial upended Pewaukee 16-6 in a 5 inning game.

In the last game Rachel Gosh once again took to the circle and shut down the Catholic Memorial offense.  The Elks lost the coin flip again, but the offense picked up where they left off in the first game, this time lead by senior Meghan Etten and sophomore Amy Kolacke.  Etten was 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2-4 in stolen bases while Amy Kolacke was 3-5 with 3 RBIs, 4 runs scored and 1 stolen base.   Rachel pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 walks and striking out 4.  Morgan Rudolf got in one inning in the circle, coming back from a long absence due to injury to strike out 2.

Elkhorn now stands at 5-5 heading into a big week against some of the top Division 1 teams in the Southern Lakes Conference.  The game with Burlington on 4/20 has been postponed. Elkhorn plays Union Grove on Tuesday and Wilmot on Friday.
