Early lead gives FVL Foxes easy victory over Winneconne, 12-1

FVL Foxes shut the door early on Winneconne, capturing a 12-1 victory on Tuesday at FVL. With eight runs in the first three innings, FVL Foxes left no doubt about the eventual outcome. An error, an RBI single by Olivia Eichhorst, and a two-run single by Vanessa Buman during the first inning and a steal of home by Darsity Birling and an RBI single by Olivia in the second inning supplied the early offense for FVL Foxes.

Darsity racked up two RBIs on three hits for FVL Foxes. She doubled in the second inning and singled in the first and third innings. Olivia's eight strikeouts were enough to push FVL Foxes past Winneconne. Olivia allowed no earned runs on three hits and no walks over five innings.

FVL Foxes easily handled Winneconne pitching as six hitters combined for 11 hits, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Anna Gereau couldn't get it done in the circle for Winneconne, taking a loss. She allowed 12 runs in four innings, walked three and struck out none. FVL Foxes tacked on another four runs in the fourth. The inning looked promising, as Vanessa singled, scoring Brittany Vils to kick things off. That was followed up by Sara Riehle's two-run home run, plating Vanessa.

Port Washington 11, Nicolet 10

Westosha Central 2, Union Grove 0

The Westosha Central softball team used solid defense and opportune offense to earn a 2-0 victory at Union Grove last night.  Alyssa Hrncar earned the shut out allowing 5 hits while striking out 2 to earn the win.  “Alyssa did what she has done all year.  She kept them off balance and hit her spots.  Overall she gave us the opportunity to win this game,” said co head coach Tom Lampe.

In a game that featured little offense, the Falcons were led by Larkin Langston (2 hits and one run scored). The Falcons broke a scoreless tie in the 6th when Kayla Konwent was intentionally walked (her third such trip to first base in the game). Langston laid down a perfect bunt which resulted in an infield hit.  Hailey Jester attempted a sacrifice bunt but the throw was dropped by the 1st sacker, loading the bases.  After a fly out Haley Spoerl walked, scoring Konwent.  “That was a really good at bat by Haley,” said the coach. “She stayed patient and forced the pitcher to throw to her.”

Spoerl’s RBI was followed by a sacrifice fly by Liz Fonk that scored Langston.  “Liz had some great at bats,” Lampe added. “She was really patient and drove the ball well.  That RBI was key to keeping us settled.”

With a two run lead, Hrncar settled in and finished the last two innings allowing two base runners and one hit over the last two innings.  “This is a tough place to win a game.  I’m glad we’re through this game and I hope we don’t have to play them again.  They are a very good team.  We’re fortunate to have swept them.  This was a big game to get through,” said Lampe.

With the win the Falcons improved to 13-3 overall ad 7-0 in the Southern Lakes Conference. They play their last conference road game on Thursday when they travel to Waterford for a 4:30 tilt.

Poynette 7, Waterloo 5

In a battle of Capitol Conference cross-over foes, two familiar combatants took the field. Waterloo invaded Diamond of Champions today in a key game that had conference title implications. Waterloo and Marshall entered the day knotted up at the top of the South Division while Poynette was cruising with a three-game lead over Columbus in the North. Waterloo needed a win to stay even with Marshall, who was idle today.

The first three innings were a real pitchers duel as Waterloo righthander Ally Renforth was mowing down Pumas batters and Poynette’s Jordan Blochwitz was knocking the patches off the eyes of the Pirates. Renforth fanned seven through the first three innings and allowed only first inning double to Shelby Wheeler. Blochwitz fanned four and coaxed three ground ball outs on come-backers to her in the third.

In the top of the fourth, with two out and nobody aboard Pirate catcher Kaia Dorn launched a high fly ball that the wind just kept pushing until it settled on the other side of the fence in dead center. It seemed as though it could be enough to get the Pirates through to the end. However, in the bottom of the inning Poynette’s Samantha Lenius nailed a Renforth low-outside drop ball and deposited it over the fence to the left side of center. That knotted the score. The Pumas were not finished though. Kelsey Saager singled to follow the Lenius blast and when Amber Peck replaced Saager at first she promptly swiped second base, getting in and around the tag. Sophomore catcher Riley Barnharst then singled and when McKenna Kelsey, Poynette’s all state infield tripled to the gap in right center, two more runs scampered across. A fly out to rightfield was then followed by the second triple of the inning, this one off the bat of senior utility player Allison Gorman who then scored the fifth run of the inning on a pinch-hit single by senior Brittany Falk.

The Pirates crept back into the game in the fifth with two unearned runs and Poynette answered in the bottom half of the inning when Wheeler drew the only base on balls of the game off Renforth. She stole second and wound up at third on an errant throw from the catcher and scored on an infielder grounder to second off the bat of Saager.

The sixth was filled with action as well. The Pirates got Justine Sorenson aboard on a single. Megan Springer then hit a sharp grounder to third but the throw to first was errant and there were suddenly runners at one and two with no outs. Springer stole second and Sorenson scored on the throw down attempt to retire that runner. Cassie Renforth then hit an rbi single to score Springer, making the score 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth McKenna Kelsey took a 1-2 pitch over the leftfield fence for her fourth automatic home run of the season and gave the Pumas a 7-5 lead. In the top of the seventh the Pirates rallied again. After a strikeout they got consecutive singles by Kaia Dorn and Ally Renforth. Renforth’s single was a shot off the fence in center but Dorn had to stick close to first as it had a chance to be caught. A slow roller to third off the bat of Sorenson resulted in the second out but put runners at two and three. Springer hit a ball between Saager at first and Kelsey at second. The second sacker dove, snared the hard grounder, scrambled for some balance while on the ground and completed an unbelievable play to end the game.

Blochwitz got her 16 win of the season and her 35th in the past two years. McKenna Kelsey was 2x3 with a triple and home run good for three rbi. The Pumas are now 16-2 on the season and 11-0 in the Capitol North Division.

Eisenhower's Schlegel tossed no-hitter today
Katie Schlegel no-hit Pewaukee. She had 8 strike outs and three walks in the 8-1 victory. Pewaukee scored an unearned run on a walk, a fielders choice and then a throwing error.  She also hit a 3 run homer to help her pitching  effort.  This is her second no-hitter this year.  She also had a 5 inning no-hitter versus Shorewood earlier in the season.  In that game she had 6 strike outs and 2 walks.
