Uh Oh, Don't Let the Rain Come Down! Uh Oh Don't Let the Rain Come Down!

Fastpitch Bulletin

My Roofs got a hole in it and I might drown!

The roof over Wisconsin has a statewide hole it lately. We played in Poynette today. That is correct. We switched sites when Cambridge's field was unplayable and although playing through light rain throughout we did get a full game in.

People who have been to the fields at Poynette High School do know a couple of things. The fields take on a lot of water and we'll do everything we can to make games happen. That is why many teams keep returning to the jamborees each year. They know that we'll work our tails off to get their games in.

With that said I must also say that the two fields at the village park are somewhat different. The softball field at the park is about like the fields at the high school but the larger field at Pauquette Park doesn't hold much water and especially in the outfield. The infield we can take of pretty well with Diamond Dry or other drying agents but the outfield really doesn't take much water. Right now there is lots of water in the outfield. If it continues to rain but not heavily we will have four playable fields in Poynette on Friday and Saturday. Arlington should be OK. I'm not sure what we will do but teams assigned to Field #5 should be ready to 1) be prepared for lots of wet feet to the outfielders and especially right fielders 2) move to another facility somewhere 3) play some later games until dark or heaven forbid 4) cancel those games and get one game or not come at all.

Hopefully by Thursday I will have a plan. I'll check with Pardeeville and Lodi as they each have one really nice diamond. The problem will be travel time. It's about 20 minutes from Poynette to Lodi and to Pardeeville. We'll try to get things figured out. Or perhaps we'll use the third diamond at Portage if they are willing.

I guess we just need to build more fields in or near Poynette.

It's been an interesting week.

Sue up in Wausaukee had me in stitches all day long on Monday. She told me a story about something that happened at one of their recent games that was a story that had me in stitches. However, I can't relay it to you in this bulletin because it just would not be appropriate to some individuals involved.

It will tell you that it had to do with how to fill out a lineup card though. Keep in mind that first and last names along with number, and postion are really key to being able to report a score to a media outlet. Last names only don't give due credit to the kid who slams one over the fence, pitches a gem or makes a tremendous play. Her story involved some names other than first or last names.

Here is a zany play that took place in southern Wisconsin recently.

There were runners on one and two with one out. The batter popped one up in the infield and the field umpire called "Infield Fly." The fielder caught the ball and instantly all the fielders and the two runners who were aboard abandoned the field of play. The umpires sorted things out and determined that since the runners left the bases they were out. If they leave the field of play they are out. Having all nine defensive players leave the field of play as well as both runners and the coaches is something most of us have never seen. But then that's why one must keep returning to the ball yard. If you don't you might not ever see something for the first time.

It's late and I need to turn in.

Have a great Wednesday!
Keep it Rising!

Bob
