Logan and Poynette hooked up in a pitcher's duel won by Logan 1-0, Turner's Packard gets another no-hitter

Statewide scores

Portage, WI -- Merrill went 2-0 today at the Portage Invitational beating Lodi 11-2 then beating LaCrosse Logan 2-0.

The day opened with Lodi and New Lisbon playing a five-inning time limit game which Lodi came from behind in during the fifth inning. The final score was 5-4.

Poynette took on Portage on the other diamond and claimed a five-inning win 12-0. Jordan Blochwitz picked up here 11th win of the season as she scattered six hits and fanned nine while not walking any batters. Freshman pitcher Alli Walker absorbed the loss for the Warriors. Jordan Mackey had a pair of his for the Pumas who scored two in the first inning, added two more in the third, plated one in the fourth and added seven in the fifth. Walker was replaced in the fifth by Brooke Eichline. McKenna Kelsey doubled for the winners in the fourth inning. The win boosted the Pumas' record to 11-0.

In round two Poynette took on LaCrosse Logan, this year one of the state's largest if not the largest Division 1 school. Logan sent sophomore pitcher Jordyn Kleman to the circle while Poynette countered with Blochwitz. The two hurlers battled in a pitcher's duel the entire game. In the bottom of the sixth the Rangers got Kleman on board as she helped herself with a single from the #9 spot in the order. She moved to second base on a passed ball the scored on a single to center off the bat of Alycia Larson. That would be the only run Kleman would need but she had to pitch out of trouble in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

With two down and nobody aboard, Poynette sophomore Riley Barnharst hit a towering drive into the teeth of the wind toward the fence in straight away leftfield. The blast forced the leftfielder deep and while just in front of the fence had the ball bounce out of her glove. It was not a routine play as Kylie Dahlby made a great effort to just get back there. Barnharst wound up at second as the tying run. That brought Pumas' catcher Emily Cibulka to the plate. With a no ball and two strike count, Cibulka line a ball toward short that the Ranger shortstop gloved and knocked down. Sydney Lamers then recovered in time to retire Cibulka and end the game on a boom-boom play at first.

Kleman allowed four hits including a second inning double by Cibulka which saw her get thrown out on an 8-6-5 play trying to get a triple. "We were the visitors and it was obvious that the game could turn out to be a 1-0 game. We forced them to make two perfect throws and they did. Had we been the home team I would have held her at two," said Poynette coach Bob Tomlinson.

Kleeman fanned 10 Pumas' batters while walking none. Blochwitz allowed just three hits and fanned 8 and issued one walk, an intentional pass to Ranger clean-up hitter Abby Leinfeld to put runners on first and second and two outs after the run had scored. The move worked for Poynette as Blochwitz fanned Rachel Rank to end the inning.

Poynette dropped to 11-1 on the season with the loss.

In the other game in round two Merrill and Lodi had a tight game going until Merrill pulled away in the final two innings and won 11-2.

In round three Portage took care of New Lisbon 16-2 as Ali Walker handcuffed the Rocket through four before allowing a couple of hits and two runs in the fifth.

In the other round three game Merrill beat Logan 2-0. Kleman did not pitch that game. There were some amazing as well as interesting plays in that game including a double play by Merril's second sacker who, with runners on first and second and one out made a running catch out into short center field, snared the ball in the web and fired to first to complete a double play that took the wind out of Logan's sails.

The Eagles lost to Red Wing, MN tonight in the first game of a round robin due largely to the incredible pitching of Emily Boxrod. The Eagles had not seen pitching like that as of yet this season. And probably won't again. She had awesome control and moved the ball every which way imaginable! It was good to play a game like that against a quality opponent.

The Eagles faced another great pitcher in the night cap against Shell Lake in a rematch of last year's sectional final and came up short again. In a well-played and well-pitched game by both teams, the Eagles took a 3-1 lead to the sixth inning but could not hold on for the win. It was a great night for our team even though we did not get a "W"..........We played against two great ball clubs and faced two of the best pitchers we will see all year long! Playing the number 1 ranked team in the state toe-to-toe showed the girls that they can play with anybody when they play good defense. It should be a great confidence booster for the team as we go forward and try to take care of our conference schedule!

Sophomore Brittany Moore got her first Varsity time on the rubber taking on conference opponent Elkhorn and she responded wonderfully. Moore kept the Elks off balance all night with her only blemishes coming on a walk, two base error and a pair of illegal pitches to plate two runs. As for the offensive side of the ball for the Broncos, they hit the ball hard all day but only had 10 hits to show for it as they struggled to find gaps until the later innings.

Game 3 Racine County Invite (3rd Place game)

The Broncos lineup finally gave a sense of confidence to Coach Ryan Boylen as they responded well after a poor offensive performance in game 2. The Broncos came out swinging against a much improved Horlick team. The Broncos plated 8 runs in the five inning time shortened game and Allie Trudeau threw a 5 inning no hitter. Trudeau was outstanding dominating a good hitting team. The only Horlick player to put the ball in play against Trudeau was a pop foul caught by the diving catcher as she struck out 14 of 15 batters.
