List of Jamboree teams with contracts returned herein

In Poynette our facility remodeling project is nearly complete. We just need to finish the interior work on our new media center behind home

 Say Hey!

Poynette ran an intrasquad scrimmage on its varsity field today. We could have played a game on it! Its in great shape. We don't have a home game scheduled next week. If somebody wants to scrimmage during the week or even move a game to Poynette to get it in just give me a shout. I will get things ready for you. Poynette is looking to play a game or two on Saturday of next week as well.

It was great to get an hour and a half of practice on the infield and outfield, rake a bit and then scrimmage for another 45 minutes.

Westosha Central is playing Downer's Grove tomorrow on the artificial turf of a football field in the southeast corner of the state. I heard that Monroe, Oshkosh North, SPASH and another club will scrimmage at Woodside Ranch on Saturday. There may be other games played in the state tomorrow as well.

The Poynette Fastpitch Jamboree is May 2nd and May 3rd. Here is a list of schools that have returned signed contracts to participate in the event. Check through the alphabetized list for each day and make sure you see your school on the list. If you are planning on being in the Jamboree and your team is not listed herein, contact me immediately.

There are several other schools whose coaches had contacted me and were sent contracts but none have been returned. A quick look at the list shows 34 schools on Saturday. That’s down about 10 from last year. The Friday list indicates 13 teams taking part. That’s about the same as most years.

Here is a situation for you to ponder.

The bases are loaded with one out. A looping liner is hit into short left-center field. It looks like the ball will drop in and the runners all head for the next base. The centerfielder dives headlong for the ball and miraculously snares the ball just before it settles into the grass. There are now two outs and the runner from second who was almost to third stops and starts to retreat to second but before she gets there the centerfielder pops up to her knees and tosses a perfect throw to the second sacker who is standing on the bag. That makes three outs. However, the runner at third who also did not tag up crossed home plate before that third out was recorded. The coach in the third base coaches box yells, “OK girls we got one out of that mess anyway!”

But wait, did they really.

The coach of the team in the field yells out to the defensive team to throw the ball to third base and appeal that the runner there had not tagged up. The shortstop simply runs over to the bag at third and appeals the no tag up by the runner.

The home plate umpire rules that run counts because that runner crossed home plate prior to the third out being recorded at second base. The defensive coach insists that the runner at third should also be called out for failure to be on the bag after first touching. The two umpires huddle and remain steadfast in their interpretation of the rules on that play.

Who is correct? The umpires or the coach of the team in the field?

Here is another situation for you to contemplate.

There are runners at first and second. A ball is hit deep into the gap in rightcenter field with less than two outs. The runner from first determines that the ball is not going to be caught and sprints to second base. When she arrives at second base, the preceding runner is one or two steps off second base. The runner from first touches second base and then shoves the preceding runner to get her going for third. The ball rolls all the way to the fence and both runners score.

The umpires both saw the assisted push just beyond second base but do not call either runner out. The defensive coach tries to appeal the assist but to no avail.

What is the proper call in this situation where the lead runner was clearly assisted by the trail runner?

Answers will appear in the next Fastpitch Softball News Bulletin.

Until next time – get out there and shovel that snow off our fields. Melt that ice around your bench areas. Get those hand warmers ready and ---
