Canes go 1-1

The 18-U Hurricanes participated in the Battle of the Borders this past weekend. Again we battled the elements along with our opponents... Friday was a complete washout as a bad storm hit just before we were too warm up around 11:00. Friday night the monsoons hit again dropping 2" of rain overnight causing a delay in the action and wiping out all the pool play games. The tournament then went to a hybrid double elimination with the #1 seeds getting a bye but if they lost there 1st game they were out unusuall format but? We drew a 4 seed (not sure how this was determined) and played the Shoreline Smash from Grafton.

Jess Butzen was in the circle and and tossed a 3 hitter allowing 1 run after facing only 20 batters for 5 innings. The Hurricanes got on the board in the top of the 1st after Cori Semler reached on an error followed by a base hit by Tori Meyer for a 1-0 lead, The Smash went 1,2,3 in the bottom half of inning 1. The top of the second Billie Nolan led off with a single but was stranded after a pop fly and a strike out to end the threat. The bottom of the second saw two fly outs then a walk by Jess Butzen followed by a strike out to end any chance of the Smash getting going. The top of the 3rd found the Hurricanes going three up and three down. So far it was Hurricanes-1, Smash-0. The top of the 4th Tori Meyer led off with a double down the 3rd base line. Amanda Kendziora then hit a double over the left fielder's head for and rbi and a double for herself, Billie Nolan then pulled a three-peat on the doubles to drive in Amanda Kendziora from second for a run, Sydney Jahnke followed with a nice single put runners at the corners with 1 out, Jess Steindorph hit a nice single to drive in Billie and Syd further scoring was ended on a failed H&R were Morgan Nelson was thrown out stealing second after drawing a walk. The bottom half was led off by A.K's then a walk to A Hunt for the Smash, followed by a opposite field hit by K Hunt, to score the Smashes only run of the game further scoring was halted by a strikeout of E Kabitzke. The top of the 5th saw Cori Semler reach on a HBP, followed by a walk issued too Tori Meyer, Amanda Kendziora then stroked a nice single up the middle to drive in Cori Semler from 3rd, Tori Meyer was thrown out trying to advance to 3rd follwoing the throw to home for 2 outs, Miranda Greenwood would pop out to 1st base to end the scoring for the Hurricanes! The bottom half of the 5th the Smash went 3 up 3 down too end the game. The Hurricanes scored 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 LOB, the Smash 1 run, 3 hits 4 LOB.

Game #2 saw the Hurricanes match up against the Kenosha Cyclones 18-U, The Hurricanes sent Miranda Greenwood to the Circle vs Janika May from NC A & T. The Hurricanes suffered 2 K's before we could get going with 2 walks to put the hot bat of Amanda Kendziora to the plate with two on and two out, some miscommunication saw Amanda lay down a nice bunt but was thrown out at 1st to end the threat! The Cyclones would plate 3 runs in the bottom half led by Janika and Hannah Foltz (KM) before we could get out of it! The top of 2 saw Jess Steindorph lead off with a single followed by a ground ball by Billie Nolan. In the continuation of the play Jess Steindorph was picked off of second after over running the bag? Morgan Klowkow hit a nice single to right with 2 outs but the threat was ended after Syd Janke grounded out too short. The bottom of the second saw things turn for the Hurricanes we got 2 quick outs surrounded by a BB, then Jessy Tostrud hit one deep to right that rolled forever because there were no fences for a 2 run HR Cyclones 5, Hurricanes 0. The Hurricanes changed pitchers to Jess Butzen who finally recorded the last out after Jess Steindorph speared a wicked liner at 1st. The 3rd saw the Hurricanes go quietly after a single by Katie Wasileski. The bottom half got ugly after again recording 2 quick outs, the wheels fell off as two errors by Morgan Nelson allowed 2 runners to reach along with a walk, Jessy Tostrud again was heard from, hitting a triple down the left field line to drive in 2 runs, after 2 more batters, The Hurricanes switched pitchers to Lindsey Semler to face Hannah Foltz who froze her on a outside changeup to end the threat, Cyclones 9, Hurricanes-0. The top of the 4th saw Amanda Kendziora again rip a single to left field but was stranded at 1st following a pop up and 2 K,s by May to end the game! Cyclones 9, Hurricanes-0
