Sectional Semi-Final Summaries - 5/28/13

Pepin/Alma 7, Elmwood/Plum City 6
Down 6-0 heading into the fifth inning the Pepin/Alma Eagles rallied to make it a game. Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, all state shortstop Ali Murray reached on a single. Breanna Ellison then hit a walk-off home run onto the playground in leftfield at Legendary Haines Field in Pepin and earned the Eagles a sectional final berth.

For the second game in a row the Eagles delighted the home town crowd with another walk off win! Down 6-0 going to the bottom of the 5th innining the Eagles had not showed much life on offense......Freshman Andi Terpstra led off the bottom of the 5th with a bunt single. Senior lead off hitter Kayla Meixner the got hit by a pitch......Tana Prokosch then hit a single up the middle to load the bases followed by Ali Murray hitting another single up the middle.....After a Breanna Ellison Strike out Sophomore Madie Hogue stepped in and Hit a bases clearing Triple to the right center gap. All of the sudden after 5 the Eagles had closed the gap to 5-6......After an uneventful 6th the Eagles shut down Elmwood/PC in the top of the 7th setting the stage once again for an incredible finish! Tana Prokosch hit a laser but it was right at the right fielder for the 1st out......Ali Murray then singled to left field........Then Breanna Ellison stepped up and wasted little time! She took the 1st pitch over the center field fence and once again the home town crowd was going absolutely bazerk! A walk off 2 run shot sent the Eagles to Chippewa Falls for the Sectional championship on Thursday against Shell Lake!

Brodhead 4, Poynette 3
The Cardinals used four unearned runs to nip the Pumas in Poynette today. Poynette scored first only to see the Cardinals take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second after two were out and nobody was aboard. Brodhead added a third run in the third inning when Taurie Burns singled and made it to third on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Douglas. The throw from the first sacker to third was in time to nail Burns but the third sacker dropped the ball. Burns then scored on an rbi single by Tabby Harnack. Poynette knotted the score in the top of the fourth when shortstop Shelby Wheeler laced a one-out rib single up the middle. In the bottom of the fifth the Cardinals got a runner aboard when Burns led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. She scored on an error by the Poynette pitcher while throwing to first to retire Douglas. That was the eventual deciding run. The Pumas threatened in the sixth on a hit batter and base on balls but Amanda Pickel coaxed two fly balls to the outfield to escape trouble. The Pumas threatened again in the seventh on a leadoff walk, stolen base and another stolen base when the Brodhead catcher caught a ball behind home plate facing the crowd and the Pumas' runner at second. Autumn Peck cleverly swiped third base after the catch. With one out an the tying run at third, Jenna Sandstrom hit a blooper between the pitcher's circle and the second sacker, Payton Wright charged but couldn't make the play on the blooper and Peck headed for home where she was met by the catcher and tagged out on a nice throw from Wright. Sandstrom wound up at second with two outs. Allison Gorman then drew the seventh walk of the game from Pickel but Dani Trienen's short fly ball to Wright at second ended the game. Burns and Harnack each had two hits for Brodhead.

Poynette wound up 20-7 on the year while Brodhead moves on to take on Mineral Point a 3-1 winner over the state's #1 ranked Division 3 team, Luther. That game is in Brodhead.

New Lisbon 4, DeSoto 3
New Lisbon beat De Soto to reach the sectional championship with a two out nobody-on-board in the bottom of the seventh inning. De Soto led 3-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when Elaine Hansen's single score on and a Sam Olson sac fly made it 3-2.

Going to the bottom of the seventh De Soto got two quick outsand were looking to close things out. Lisa OMeara and Krista Ulrich drew walks
and a single by Micheala Gina tied it at 3-all. Elaine Hansen then singled to left but the runner stayed at third with the bases loaded. Freshman shortstop Adelle Hansen then slapped a single over third base for the exciting 4-3 win. Third ranked New Lisbon will take on second ranked Belmont
at Potosi Thursday night in what promises to be a great game to see who goes to the state tournament.
