RUSTON, La. – The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2013 All-WAC softball teams and major awards as selected by the league’s head coaches. New Mexico State’s Staci Rodriguez was named WAC Player of the Year, while San Jose State’s Amanda Pridmore was named Pitcher of the Year. Meanwhile, Louisiana Tech’s Anna Cross was named Freshman of the Year and San Jose State’s Peter Turner was named Coach of the Year.
Rodriguez, a sophomore rightfielder from Paramount, Calif., earns WAC Player of the Year after leading all players in WAC games with 26 RBI, nine homer runs, 56 total bases and a .903 slugging percentage. She also ranked second in runs scored (16), fourth in batting average (.403) and on-base percentage (.507), and sixth in hits (25). She was named WAC Hitter of the Week three times during the season.
Pridmore, a senior righthander from Modesto, Calif., earns WAC Pitcher of the Year honors after leading the WAC in ERA (1.25), strikeouts (88), wins (13), saves (3), appearances (19) and games started (13) during WAC play. She also ranked second in opponent batting average (.203) during WAC play. Her 83 strikeouts was 35 more than any other player in the league and she was named WAC Pitcher of the Week five times during the season.
Cross, a shortstop and pitcher from Cross Roads, Texas, tied for second in the WAC in conference games in games started (12), ranked third in slugging percentage (.653), tied for sixth in wins (4), tied for seventh in both doubles (5) and appearances (13), and ninth in both batting average (.367) and innings pitched (59.1). She earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors once this season.
Turner earns Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career after leading his team to its first-ever WAC regular-season title with a 17-4 mark. The Spartans also set the program record for wins in a season (39). In WAC play, SJSU led the conference in ERA, opposing batting average, strikeouts, hits allowed, runs allowed, homers allowed, triples and sacrifice flies.
New Mexico State led the way with six players on the All-WAC teams, followed by Texas State with five and San Jose State and Louisiana Tech with four each. The complete teams are listed below.
