Here is Rule 8, Section 2, Article 5 from the Rules Book
The batter-runner shall be called out when: She runs outside the three-foot (0.91m) lane and, in the judgement of the umpire, interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base (there must be a throw; however, the batter-runner may run outside the three foot (0.91m) lane to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. A runner is considered outside the running lane if either foot is completely outside the lane and in contact with the ground.
"if either foot is outside the lane and in contact with the ground" means even one step outside the lane and in contact with the ground. On a bunt play out in front of home plate that should be the key thing a plate umpire watches for on the play.
Here is a crazy situation for you to contemplate. The bases are loaded when the defensive coach asks for a defensive conference. The coach meets with the defensive players in or near the circle and the three base runners hustle over to the third base coach's box area to confer there. When the plate ump breaks up the defensive conference, the three base runners head back to their bases, or at least they thought they had. The next batter singles in the runners from second and third. The defensive coach then appeals that the baserunners had actually gone to the wrong bases after the defensive conference. The runner who should have been at second was at third and the other runner was at second when the ensuing batter singled. Figure this one out!
I got word that Nicole Newman of Madison LaFollette threw three consecutive no-hitters a couple of weeks ago. Although she lost 1-0 in one of them she surely deserves a Fastpitch Chronicle No-Hitter Certificate for each of them but nobody from LaFollette must read these bulletins. The only way I heard about them is if I happen to catch a score in a newspaper or see a score report come in. Perhaps somebody can get me the details of her three no-hitters such as the opponent, the date, the scores, the number of strikeouts in each game and the number of walks.
Here is another one we missed - On 04/25/2013, SPASH vs Marshfield, freshman Shaylee Kluck threw a no-hitter. Does anyone have more details so I can do the certificate?
There was also a no-hitter thrown recently vs Amherst by a Bonduel pitcher. I think I lost the e-mail with the information. Help me out with this one too.
Alli Murray of Pepin/Alma broke the school record for rbi in a career tonight in a twinbill sweep of Spring Valley and both of those games were five-inning games as seemed necessary by the administrators in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. She likely would have a few more if the games were seven-inning games. I hate five-inning games unless they are mercy rule games. To me it's like playing only 71% of a basketball game or 71% of a hockey game. It's another area that makes one feel terrible for this year's senior class of athletes in the state. A miserable year due to weather causes them to not only lose out on games that can't be made up but causes them to lose out on 29% of the games that are actually being played.
Nicole Newman, Madison LaFollette righthander tossed her fourth no-hitter of the season today. She beat Madison East 1-0. Newman fanned 17 Purgolders and walked none.
The game-winner came in the fourth inning off the bat of Haley Coulthart who hit an rbi triple for the game's only run. Newman was walked in the fourth and a courtesy runner, Megan Corcoran was inserted at first base. Corcoran attemped to swipe second base but was thrown out. Sophomore catcher, Amy Lazendorf then lined a Morrison offering for a one-out double to left center. The ball glanced off the shortstop's glove as it was a rocket over her head. The next batter whiffed and brought up senior shortstop Haley Coulthart Here drive to right skipped past the right fielder as it was slicing toward the line for an rbi triple. Newman took care of the Purgolders to preserve the perfect game and the win for the Lancers..
For Newman it marked her sixth shutout of the season to go along with three no-hitters and the perfect game.
