Poynette sweeps twinbill at Luther Prep, 8-6 and 10-6
The Poynette Pumas' fastpitch team swept Watertown Luther Prep in a Capitol North Doubleheader today by scores of 8-6 and 10-6 and held on to a one-game lead (in the loss column over Columbus) while inproving their record to 6-0.

It wasn't really pretty but it wasn't all that ugly either. In game one the Phoenix jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Jenna Hering singled off Poynette starter Alexa Peters. Shortstop Anna Kuske followed with a shot to the base of the fence in left center sending Hering home from first base. A slow roller to short that retired Lianna Schroeder for the second out allowed Kuske to scoot home with the second run. In the second inning the Phoenix were on fire again as they reached Peters for three more runs. After Peters fanned Brittany Wendt, Abbie Brown singled and stole second base. Peters walked Rachel Beaver to put runners on one and two. Leadoff batter Morgan Shevey then had an infield single to load the bricks. Jordan Blochwitz, a sophomore righthander was called upon to relieve Peters at that point. Hering touched her for two-run single making it 4-0. Kuske into a fielder's choice before Schroeder helped her own cause with an rbi single to make it 5-0.

The Pumas went down in order the first time through the lineup as Schroeder struck out for in those three innings. In the top of the fourth Poynette got leadoff batter Jordyn Mackey aboard when she drew a base on balls off Schroeder. After a 5-3 ground out Schroeder issued a free pass to Brittany Falk and Kelsey Saager reached and advanced the other two runners. Samantha Lenius then took an 0-2 offering to right center for a three-run double to get Poynette to within two runs at 5-3. Schroeder worked out of that inning but in the fourth the Pumas touched her for three more markers. Sophomore centerfielder Jenna Sandstrom drew a base on balls to lead off the inning. Catcher Emily Cibulka singled sending Sandstrom to third. Courtesy runner Amber Peck stole second and after Schroeder fanned Mackey for the first out Shelby Wheeler bunted and when the throw was errant at first both runners scored to knot the game. Wheeler went later scored on a ball that got through the second sacker and deep into the outfield. That made it 6-5. Poynette got another run in the sixth when Lenius laced a Schroeder offering to the fence in right center. Just as she was about to touch third the relay throw to the bag from Kuske, playing shortstop went out of play allowing Lenius to score.

The Phoenix made a run at the Pumas by scoring on erun in the sixth on a single by Shevey, a walk to Hering and infield single by Kuske. Schroeder then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Shevey. The score was then 7-6. The Pumas saw Wheeler double to lead off the seventh and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Falk. An infield roller to short allowed Wheeler to plate an insurance run. Blochwitz then shut the door on the Phoenix in the seventh with a one-two-three inning.

Game Two
In the second game it was Poynette who jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to see Luther Prep battle back and knot the game with two in the second and four in the third. Alexa Peters again started in the circle for Poynette while Schroeder went back there for the Phoenix. Blochwitz came on again in the third for Poynette with two outs and a runner at second. She got out of the inning by getting a ground out to Peters at third. That would be it for the Phoenix as Blochwitz did not allow a base runner the rest of the way.

With the game tied at six the Pumas erupted in the fifth with three runs. They added another in the bottom of the sixth when Falk doubled to the fence in leftcenter and scored on an rbi single by Kelsey Saager.

Note: A game between Cambridge and Waterloo appears on wissports.net and in the State Journal as a 10-0, five inning win for Cambridge. However it's hard to figure out how a team can get shutout (Waterloo) and have only three hits in the line score and then have one of the three Dorn girls go 2x3, Brennan Kurkowski go 2x4 and Alli Renforth go 2x3. According to the summary at the bottom of that score report, one of the Dorn girls had a double and Renforth had two of them. I'm thinking something happened in the reporting of this game and that Waterloo actually won the game 10-0 in five innings with eight hits.

Iola-Scandinavia 15, West Salem 3; Iola Scandinavia 7, West Salem 2
Brianne Huettner had a day to remember in Iola-Scandinavia‘s softball teams doubleheader sweep of West Salem on Saturday.
Huettner smacked a grandslam in both games and had a combined 11 RBIs as the Thunderbirds rolled to 15-3 and 7-2 victories, respectively. I have forwarded a Fastpitch Chronicle Grand Slam certificate to her coach at I-S.
