Fastpitch Bulletin

You win some, you lose some, and some just get away from you!

It was certainly the best day for fastpitch this season in Columbia County. I understand there was some inclement weather including more very measurable snow in the north. However, here in Columbia County the temperature was in the low 60s, the sun shone and there was dust on the field here.

When it settled at the end of the night, Lakeside Lutheran had scored a comeback 12-10 win over the Pumas. They overcame a 10-1 deficit after three innings of play and scored nine runs in the top of the seventh. It reminds me of how much I enjoy reading stories about Yogi Berra, the famed Yankee catcher. The Yogisms were really prevalent today. For instance, "We just kept making all the wrong mistakes!" Also this one: "You give 100 percent in the first half of the game, and if that isn't enough in the second half you give what's left." and this: "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken." and this one:"I never blame myself when I'm not hitting. I just blame the bat, and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn't my fault that I'm not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?"

But here is the one that is really fitting today: "The other teams could make trouble for us if they win."

With the win Lakeside ended a 37-game win streak for Poynette in Conference play. I'd say they made trouble for us with the win. So, Yogi's thought that, "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken." really fits well.

I'm not taking away anything from the Lakeside players. Actually they have several excellent players. Take Winter Petry for instance. She's a sophomore who is one of the best, if not the best hitter in the Capitol North. She recorded more hits as a freshman against our All State pitcher last year than most kids had had in a career against her. Today she was 3x4 with a double and a mess of rbi. Her one out was a line drive right at our second sacker. And Brittany Magsamen was 2x5 and had two singles in the seventh inning along with 2 rbi. Whtiney Kulow may have struck out her first two times at the plate but her final two appearances were singles and two rbi while rightfielder Rachel Glaeske was 2x4. Poynette failed to score in the fourth through seventh innings. Certainly a case of: "We just kept making all the wrong mistakes!"

Elsewhere around the state today:

Plymouth Head Coach Gale Grahn's Panthers won for the 300th time in his career. I've updated the Coaches Honor Roll page and have sent off a Fastpitch Chronicle/Wissports Coaches 300 Win Award Certificate to him. Congratulations to Gale Grahn, another tremendous coach and person.

Waupun is looking for a team that is desparate to get some games in or just get on a diamond. They have three great fields and nobody to play after a school pulled out of a doubleheader with them this Saturday. Give coach Tom Hagstrom a call or an e-mail at Waupun High School and he will take care of you.

Superior to play in Irish Dome on Thursday!
There is more snow in the north! Lots more snow in the north. So much snow that contrary to the rumor last week that the Superior School District had cancelled all spring sports for 2013, the Superior Softball team will play Hermantown, Minnesota in the Irish Dome located in the Twin Cities area. The real kicker is this though. The Superior superiors (the administration) has given the girls the day off of school to travel to the dome and get some games in, both JV and Varsity. Superior was supposed to play in the Irish Dome at the end of last week but they got snowed in up in Superior on the day they were supposed to play. I spoke with Superior Head Coach Amy Zembo tonight about their situation. They got more snow today, like six to eight more inches.

I wonder how high those banks are outside the sideline fences in Grantsburg today! If they got six or eight on top of the 12 they got last Thursday night and into Friday then they will be able to sell stadium seating that actually looks down upon the field of play.

That's it for tonight!
Keep it Rising!
Bob
