Fastpitch Bulletin

And there's snow and ice all over the field.

Hello fastpitch friends!

After one of the coldest and snow-covered starts to a high school softball season in this state in my 34 years of coaching, things are starting to look a bit different. At least they are in Columbia County.

The Pepin/Alma Eagles' field is bare though in Pepin County. The folks up there plowed the entire playing area of historic Haines Field off several weeks ago and it has made a difference. "I think we could drag our infield and play tomorrow but the ice wall we created by the outfield fence is still there," state Eagles Head Coach Matt Belerive. He has a right to be anxious to get his Eagles out there on that diamond as great things are expected from those ladies this spring.

Meanwhile the Middleton and D.C. Everest teams apparently headed to the MetroDome earlier to play a game that was to begin at 3:00 a.m. That according to one of the Madison area TV stations. We haven't seen the results of that game yet though.

Here in Poynette a crew was hand today to instal the new roofing on the varsity field dugouts. While that was going on a portion of the work crew used pry bars to chip and remove the ice that covered the field between the backstop and home plate. About a ton of ice was removed by those people in a matter of about three hours. It will make a difference in how soon the Pumas get on the field to practice or play a game.

I drove past the fields at DeForest earlier in the week and noticed that it appeared that the Norski girls had shoveled off some of the snow from their infields as well. A picture in the Portage paper showed three of the Warriors varsity starters hauling snow off their varsity field earlier this week as well.

We're well past the earliest date that games could have been played (March 19th). Some teams headed for warmer climates so we'll be interested in seeing how much of a jump they have on those of us who stayed in Wisconsin.
