Westosha Central used a 9 run 3rd inning and the solid pitching of Samantha Erber to defeat Racine Horlick/Park 12-2 in 5 innings to open the WIAA tournament.
Erber went the distance allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6. "Sam did a great job of getting ahead of their hitters and missing their barrels." (co-head coach Tom Lampe). The Falcons started off slowing, being blanked in their first two at-bats. But in the 3rd, Mykenna Sturino singled with one out, stole second and scored on a double by Lila McNeill. With two out, Maya Gagliardi and Meghan Lampos singled. Both scored on a single by Erber. Megan Conners, running for Erber, and Alex McKinney scored on an error and a single by Allie Loucas. Maya Swanson plated Loucas and herself on an error. Then Emma Smith tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Sturino singled again and McNeill singled to score Sturino. The Falcons increased their lead in the 4th. Gagliardi walked and scored on a Lampos double. Lampos scored on a McKinney double and Addie Feekes scored on a fielder's choice by Cadence Castillo. Racine responded with two in the 5th. Nevaeh Folk led off with a single and Kaitlyn Winkler followed with a two-run home run. But Erber stopped the rally right there to finish the game. "We had a slow start but once we started hitting, it kept going the rest of the game. Overall we did a good job at the plate. We will need to keep this going if we want to keep advancing," said co-head coach Tom Lampe.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 18-2 overall. They return to action on Thursday when they host the regional final against either Oak Creek or Racine Case.
