Sophomore Lily Doerr hits solo homer in top of 8th

Lake Mills Clinches Capitol North Title against Poynette

Lake Mills travelled to Poynette May 8th with the opportunity to claim outright the Capitol North conference championship.

In a very tightly contested pitching duel between Lake Mills’ Ava Kleinfeldt and Poynette’s Morgan Gunderson, both pitchers threw shutout ball through 7-innings and the score was knotted at 0-0 going into extra innings.

That’s when sophomore Lily Doerr came through big in the top of the 8th. With Kassidy McCaffery in relief of Gunderson, Doerr blasted a solo homerun over the right-center fence. Doerr’s clutch night fell just one short of hitting for the cycle as she went 3x3 with a single, double, and homerun.

Kleinfeldt dominated again in the circle effectively shutting the Puma’s offense down. She allowed three hits, struck out nine, and walked one. The Puma’s Gunderson also shut out the L-Cats, giving up 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 innings. McCaffery absorbed the loss in relief, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Haydenn Sellnow added a double and a single to Doerr’s night.

“This was a huge win for our program.” said coach Jim Clift. “Aside from the obvious pride of a conference championship for our school and our team, to do it against a team the caliber of Poynette and their very rich history and do it on their legendary field adds something special to it like it did in ‘21.

It has always been an honor to play Poynette and I’m proud of our team to achieve this in a very tight battle like this was. We’ll enjoy this accomplishment, but we know it’s just the first of more goals that we’ve set for ourselves. Our team repeats our motto daily to ‘Dream Big, then work hard to make those dreams come true.’ We achieved step one of those dreams tonight through hard work.”

Lake Mills hosts Poynette in a rematch Friday at 5 PM at Rotary Park.
