The final was 11-1 in five innings

Today the Pumas rebounded after a tight loss last night by whipping Columbus 11-1 in five innings.

Tonight was one of those games where the winner scores more runs in any one inning than the loser scores in the entire game. Poynette started like a campfire lighted with charcoal lighter fluid. They were sizzling. Addison Mackey drew a leadofff walk (always a bad omen for the opposing team). Emma Gavinski dropped down a nice bunt to send Mackey to second. Kassidy McCaffery would help her own cause with an rbi single before Grace Gavinski, playing with a lacerated shin from getting cleated and getting a few stiches last night followed with a single. When Morgan Gunderson hit a screamin' triple those two girls touched home plate for a 3-0 lead. After a comebacker to the pitcher there were two down and Karli Rivette drew a base on balls before Ayla Johnson laced a single that scored the fifth run of the inning.

McCaffery then entered the circle for the Pumas. She allowed a leadoff single and the second batter sacrificed her to second but on the play Poynette has always looked for a way to get outs when most don't. Addison Mackey took the throw at first and when centerfielder Grace Gavinski snuck into second behind a runner who rounded second way too far because there were no defenders at the bag when she got there. Mackey had already released a hard throw to second where Gavinski was waiting. A run-down then occurred where an easy out was made when Gavinski threw to Maggie Steinhorst covering third for the tagout.

In the Poynette second Mackey hit a 1-1 pitch for a leadoff triple and scored when Emma Gavinski hit one to the shortstop who through wildly to first allowing her to get to second. After a ground out to third Grace Gavinski collected her second hit in two innings for an rbi single and the Pumas were out to a 7-0 lead.

Columbus got an unearned run in the second to cut the lead to six but the Pumas answered back when Karli Rivette collected her hit third in two nights leading off the inning. Johnson then doubled chasing Rivettte all the way around from first. When Bella Severson singled Johnson scampered home. After two flyball outs to center, McCaffery drew a walk and Grace Gavinski was struck by a pitch before Gunderson drove Severson in. The score was suddenly10-1.

Poynette scored the 11th run in the fourth which utlimately ended the game after seven on the 10-run mercy rule. Rivettte singled again and after Johnson and Severson went down on fly balls Mackey unloaded her second triple of the game (which may have tied a school record).

McCaffery got the win allowing one unearned run, three hits, struck out four and walked none.

With Lake Mills' 6-5 loss today to Lodi the Capitol North standings show Lodi alone at the top while the two feline mascots are a game behind with one loss each.

The Pumas host Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 4 PM.
