Late rally by Columbus falls short- Ava Kleinfeldt held them off

Lake Mills Opens Conference Play with a Win at Columbus

Lake Mills senior Taylor Wollin had a big night at the plate to lead the Lake Mills L-Cats to a Capitol Conference North victory against the Columbus Cardinals.

Lake Mills went up 6-0 through 4-innings, but Columbus played with a never-die attitude and played their way back to 6-4 going into the 7th inning. Lake Mills was able to fight off the strong late push by Columbus and ended the game with the conference win.

Leading the way at the plate for Lake Mills was Wollin going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Following Wollin was junior 3rd baseman Savannah Radtke (2-for-2) and senior center fielder Emily Wollin (2-for-3) with a double. Ava Kleinfeldt added her own double and 3 RBI’s to the L-Cat offense.

Kleinfeldt earned the win in the circle. She allowed four runs on five hits and struck out three and walked one. Gretta Kelm led Columbus at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double. Katerina Hart took the loss. She gave up six runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked two. The victory moved the L-Cats to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

“Conference wins are always big wins no matter what, so this was an important start for us,” said coach Jim Clift. “This game was a strong reminder that every pitch and every play matters and that games are never over until the final out. Columbus deserves a ton of credit. They never quit fighting and swung the bats well. We played solid team softball offensively and defensively, which will always be our objective. The Capitol Conference is, as always, very good again this year.”

Lake Mills hosts Martin Luther on Saturday, April 13 at 11 AM at Rotary Park.
