a five-run sixth is the difference

Poynette 5, Marshall 0

In many games the winning team scores more runs in one inning that the losing team scores in the entire game.

That was the case today at Diamond of Champions as the Pumas scored five runs, four unearned in the bottom of the fifth and Marshall had a shutout tossed at them by Pumas' pitcher Kassidy McCaffery and the Pumas' defense.

McCaffery was good today. As a matter of fact she was perfect through three innings. om the end she had scattered four hits, struck out six and walked none.

In the Pumas' sixth Ayla Johnson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Addison Mackey who was safe on an errant throw that saw both runners move up another base. With runners on two and three Emma Gavinski hit a slow roller to third that saw the third sacker just hold onto the ball. So with the bases loaded McCaffery hit one that went between the shortstops legs and into the outfield scoring two runs. Grace Gavinski then hit a flyball to left that was too deep for the leftfielder to get to and two runs scored. With the bases loaded again later Bella Severson hit a ball to leftfield that scored Gavinski on a sacrifice fly.

After allowing a leadoff double in the top of the sixth the Pumas closed out the the game 1-2-3.

The Pumas had just three hits of their own. Grace Gavinski, Johnson and McCaffery had those with the latter having a double for the first hit of the game in the fourth inning.

Poynette is now 3-1 on the season and host River Valley on Thursday.

Next week is a key one for the Capitol North as the Pumas will face Lodi and Lake Mills.
