Lake Mills Wins Both Games in Weekend Softball Challenge

Lake Mills soundly defeated both of their opponents Saturday at the Woodside Sports HS Softball Challenge in Mauston. The L-Cats handed the undefeated Weyauwega-Fremont Warhawks their first loss of the year with an 8-0 score in game one. They followed up by defeating Reavis High School (Illinois) 9-3 in game two.

Leading the way in the circle and at the plate in both games was senior pitcher Ava Kleinfeldt. In game one, Kleinfeldt began her dominant day by shutting out the Warhawks while striking out 13 and allowing only four hits and one walk. In an early pitching duel between hard-ballers Kleinfeldt and junior Olivia Witkowski, Lake Mills senior Natalie Grulke brought in two runs on a single in the second inning. The L-Cats went on to collect 11-hits in the game with multiple two-hit performances by Grulke, Kleinfeldt, Sellnow, senior Taylor Wollin, and junior Aubrey Lepak. Senior outfielder Emily Wollin added two stolen bases in the game. Warhawk senior Hannah Pantzlaff got two of her team's four hits going 2-for-4 at the plate. Witkowski took her first loss.

In game two, the L-Cats erupted with 16 hits in the 9-3 victory. Kleinfeldt continued her hot streak at the plate going 4-for-4 with an impressive two triples in the contest. The tie was broken in the 3rd inning when junior Savannah Radtke singled, followed by one of Kleinfeldt’s two triples and another single by senior Taylor Wollin and all three scoring. The L-Cats bats fully erupted in the sixth inning by scoring five runs and a very rare three triples in one inning by Junior Haydenn Sellnow, Kleinfeldt, and Wollin. Sophomore Lily Doerr added another triple to round out a 5-triple game for the L-Cats. Kleinfeldt and Sellnow further helped the cause by turning two double plays in the game. Kleinfeldt moved to a 3-0 record in the win giving up five hits, three runs, four strike outs and no walks. Junior Aubrey Lepak came in relief the final two innings allowing no runs on two hits, three strikeouts, and no walks.

“It was a great weekend in a variety of ways. Great team time on Friday followed by solid play on Saturday. We always preach to our hitters to be aggressive yet disciplined and mechanically sound at the plate, and we achieved that goal today. Ava is very difficult to beat when she’s backed up by a team with an attack mindset at the plate and a stingy defense.”

Lake Mills hosts Capital South opponent Cambridge Blue Jays on Tuesday, April 9 at 5 PM in Lake Mills.
