Maiya Tearney pitched a three-hit shutout with errorless defense behind her, and homered and drove in three runs, as the Spartans improved to 2-0 overall and in North Shore Conference play. Tearney struck out three and walked one.
Tearney homered in the second inning to put West up 1-0. With two on and two out in the sixth, Tearney punched a single up the middle to plate two runs.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an error, stolen base, sacrifice bunt and suicide squeeze.
