Lake Mills opened the 2023 WIAA Regional Semifinals by beating the Martin Luther Spartans 8-1 at home in a rematch.

The L-Cats picked up where they left off by taking a 3-1 lead in the first inning and they never looked back. Avery Chilson led the charge offensively and defensively. Her bat continued to light up the offense going 2x3 at the plate with a walk and 2 RBI’s. Haydenn Sellnow and Lily Doerr also continued their hot bats with both going 2x4. Junior centerfielder Emily Wollin ripped a homerun in the 2nd inning to add to the L-Cat firepower. Chilson’s big night continued with another impressive performance in the circle. She pitched all 7 innings in the win and gave up 5 hits, struck out 6, and no walks. The L-Cat defense has been solid all season and had their 9th game of the season with no errors. Amy Hoppert and Melissa Janetske led Martin Luther at the plate going 2x3 each. Kaleigh Blazei got the loss for the Spartans giving up 8 runs on 9 hits, striking out 8 and walking 2. Martin Luther also committed 5 errors.

“It was a nice win to open the playoffs for us. Our players are focused on each doing their own job offensively and defensively. Collectively, that has made us a very solid team. As I’ve said, at the root of this streak are three things: we’ve grown together as a unified team and are having fun, which was hard work and wasn’t always easy. They‘re each listening to the continual challenge to always have themselves mentally prepared to play at their own individual peak performance. Third, we’ve had high-rep, efficient practices to emphasize staying sharp and focused down the stretch,” said Coach Jim Clift.

Lake Mills hosts the Wilmot Panthers in the Regional Championship at 5 PM on Thursday at Rotary Park.
