Ava Kleinfeldt shuts out the Cardinals on a three-hitter

Belle Topel hit two towering blasts, Avery Chilson went 3x4

Lake Mills Senior Belle Topel and Junior Ava Kleinfeldt had big nights in an important Capitol North matchup between Lake Mills and Columbus.

The L-Cats beat the Cardinals 11-0 in 5 innings. Kleinfeldt shut out the Cardinals and allowed only three hits with eight strikeouts and only 1 walk.

Along with Topels two towering home runs in the 1st and 4th innings, she also had six RBI's and was 2x3 at the plate. Lake Mills notched 13 hits and were led by senior Avery Chilson who went 3x4. Junior Taylor Wollin (2x3) and freshman catcher Lily Doerr (2x4) each added to the L-Cats big night at the plate.

Kleinfeldt registered the win giving her a perfect 5-0 on the season. Emmajo Peck was the losing pitcher for the Cardinals giving up 13 hits, and 11 runs while walking 5 and striking out 2.

"We've had a nice season so far and feel like we are just a few plays away from no losses, but more importantly I believe this was the first game we really played like a family, said L-Cat head coach Jim Clift." The energy was high and we were very aggressive at the plate and Ava pitched great. We dealt with some challenges and internal struggles this past week, but the great beauty of it is that, much more important than the win, I believe we watched a team overcome and grow together through that challenge and we learned a great lesson about the value of persistence and battling for each other. I'm very proud of them.

Lake Mills faces '22 state qualifier Wisconsin Lutheran tomorrow at 5 PM at Rotary Park.
