Beat Waterford and Merrill

The Poynette Pumas made the short trip to Portage today where they took on two good teams in Waterford and Merrill.

The opened with Waterford, a team out of the Southern Lakes Conference. The Pumas behind the pitching and hitting of Holly Lowenberg recorded a 7-2 win. Lowenberg went 2x3 at the plate with a double and drew a base on balls. In the circle she held off a good hitting Waterford team with a two hitter. She struck out 11 and reportedly recorded here 500th career strikeout (she did not play in 2020 due to the 2020 season being cancelled due to COVID).

The Pumas scored four runs in the third inning when Emma Gavinski doubled as the first batter of the inning. Maggie Steinhorst then drew a base on balls. After a fly out to centerfield Addison Mackey walked to load the bases and when Morgan Gunderson followed she drove a three-run double to the outfield fence. After a strikeout, Lowenberg drew the base on balls and Kassidy McCaffery and Laken Wagner followed with consecutive singles with McCaffery's resulting in an rbi.

In the fifth the Pumas added some insurance when Gunderson reached on an error, Brooke Steinhorst walked and Lowenberg singled. Wagner hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to plate the 7th run.

Poynette collected just six hits in the game. Lowenberg had two, Wagner had one as did Emma Gavinski (double), Gunderson (double) and McCaffery.

After a two hour break the Pumas played Merrill. The final score was 5-0 with senior Brooke Steinhorst scattering five hits, striking out six.

Addison Mackey got things rolling with a leadoff double and later scored in the inning. In the fifth inning after the first two Pumas went down Gunderson singled as did Brooke Steinhorst and when Lowenberg doubled both runners sprinted home.

The Pumas plated another run in the sixth when Laken Wagner doubled then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Peyton Syvrud and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Gavinski.

In the top of the seventh the Pumas added a fifth run when Brooke Steinhorst got things going with a one-out single. Grace Gavinski followed with a pinch-hit single and when McCaffery collected her second single of the game Steinhorst cruised home.

Poynette collected 11 hits in the game, two by Mackey, two by Brooke Steinhorst, two by McCaffery and one safe hit each by Maggie Steinhorst, Gunderson, Wagner, Lowenberg and Grace Gavinski.

The Pumas are now 13-1 on the season. They will travel to Lake Mills Tuesday to play Lakeside Lutheran then travel to Watertown on Friday to play Luther Prep before hosting three team on Saturday at Diamond of Champions. There will be more about that four-team schedule later in the week.
