Iola-Scandinavia (17-6) beat Algoma (6-6) 5-3 at Waupaca for the WIAA D-4 regional championship on Thursday afternoon. The Thunderbirds will play the winner of Bonduel and Crandon on Tuesday, May 31 in a sectional semi-final game. Bonduel and Crandon will play Friday, May 27 at Bonduel starting at 2PM.
Algoma started quickly by scoring all three of their runs in the first and second innings. The T-Birds scored a run in the first inning and took the lead in the game with three runs in the third inning. Iola-Scandinavia added a run in the fourth inning for the final 5-3 score.
Alexa Christoph and Jaelyn Sivertson each had three hits including a triple for Christoph and two triples for Sivertson for the Thunderbirds. Marin Hoyord had two hits while Hoyord and Chloe Timdal each drove in two runs.
T-Bird pitcher Maddie Much went the distance to earn the win. Much allowed six hits, no walks and had three strikeouts. Much gave up four of her six hits in the first two innings and then settled down and let her defense help her out.
