Kaukauna, Waukesha Catholic Memorial, Dodgeville, Mishicot and Oakfield win State Championships

Hello Fastpitch Buffs,

It was a great state tournament under the circumstances and there were some interesting games and some great games to watch.

On Thursday the D1 teams played their quarterfinal games at Bayport High School where the facility was fantastic albeit the playing surface was artificial turf both in the outfield as well as the infield. Meanwhile the Division 5 teams were playing at UW-Green Bay on their new facility also with artificial turf in both the outfield and infield.

Seating was limited at both venues therefore the WIAA did not sell advance tickets nor sell tickets at the venues. Instead tickets had to be purchased from one of the participating teams and each one of those was limited to 300 tickets. So in Division 1 it was pretty easy to get a ticket to most games while in the lower divisions tickets were harder to come by.

The seating at UW-Green Bay was rented from a company that specializes in bleachers on a trailer-type of base. I will write more about that in the next bulletin.

The fence at Bayport was 200 feet all the way around while at UW-Green Bay the fence was deep. It was very deep. It was so deep that I do not think there was a single automatic home run but there was one inside-the-park home run in the Juda/Albany vs Blair Taylor game. It was the first inside the park home run in a state tournament game since the days of having to play a state tournament on a slow pitch facility without temporary outfield fences. So that means as far back as 2002.

Kaukauna beat Sun Prairie in a tight, quickly played final (it last about 65 minutes) by a score of 1-0. In Division 2 Waukesha Catholic Memorial beat two unbeaten teams on the same day to claim the title. They beat unbeaten Jefferson by one run in the semi-final then upended Baldwin-Woodville 5-4 in the title game which featured an exciting pickoff play at first base the CM catcher after a one-single put the tying run at first. In Division 3 Dodgeville outlasted two good opponents with a two-game hitting barrage that shattered the Division 3 record for most hits in two games with 16 hits in the semi-final against Lomira and 12 hits in the final against Prescott. In Division 4 Mishicot, after being the bridesmaids in 2019 and no season in 2020 claimed the title with a win over Juda/Albany after that team had beaten unbeaten Blair-Taylor in a semi-final. So three teams entered the state tournament unbeaten but none of the three could put the final touch on great seasons. In Division 5 Oakfield added another title to that school's state tournament titles with wins over Seneca 10-0 and Hurley who had beaten Stevens Point Pacelli in a semi-final.

That's it for this edition. Look for a much longer Bulletin tomorrow and again on Friday.

Keep it Rising!

Bob
