Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the conference championship of the Central Wisconsin Conference - Eastern Division with a 9-5 win over Iola-Scandinavia. The Chargers finished with an 11-1 conference record (14-1 overall) - one game ahead of Amherst with a 10-2 record. The Thunderbirds finished in third place with a 7-5 conference record and a 16-9 overall record.
Trailing 1-0, Wittenberg-Birnamwood scored three runs in the third inning and put the game away with six runs in the fifth inning. The T-Birds scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to cut into the lead, but the rally stalled.
Mckenna Foster had two hits for the Chargers including a first inning double. Jaelyn Sivertson and Katie Cherek had three and two hits for Iola-Scandinavia respectively. Sivertson also had a first inning double.
Pitcher Jasmin Duranceau went the distance to earn the win for W-B. Duranceau allowed no walks and had three strikeouts.
Both teams start WIAA tournament play next week Monday, June 14. Wittenberg-Birnamwood will host Nekoosa in Division 3 action while Iola-Scandinavia will host Sevastopol in Division 4 action.
