Poynette sweeps Random Lake at Diamond of Champions

Pumas' pitching strikes out 24 in 13 inings of work -- Peyton Gest shines at the plate for Pumas with 5 hits including a homerun

The Pumas swept a doubleheader today against Random Lake by scores of 10-0 in six innings and 6-0.

In the first game senior Peyton Gest brought a red-hot bat to Diamond of Champions going 4x4 with three singles and a towering home run to end the game in the bottom of the sixth via the 10-run mercy rule. She had four rbi in all.

Junior utilility player Abby Klink had two hits in two plate appearances while sophomore pitcher Holly Lowenberg went 2x4 including a two run homer in the third inning. Sophomore catcher Laken Wagner added a double. The Pumas collected 12 hits in all.

Lowenberg was again dominant in the circle as she scattered four hits, walked none and struck out 13.

In game two the Pumas jumped out to a 3-0 led in the top of the first when Ashia Meister led off by reaching on a second base error and took second on a wild pitch. Lowenberg followed with a double and scored on an rbi single off the bat of pitcher Brooke Steinhorst who then took third on a passed ball and scored on Wagner's sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Random Lake freshman pitcher Jayla Harter then cooled the Pumas' bats off, not allowing any runs in the second through sixth innings while facing just three batters in the second, third and fourth innings, just four in the fifth and five in the sixth. In the top of the seventh Harter retired Meister and Lowenberg before Steinhorst doubled and stole third base. She scored on an rbi single by Gest who later moved to third on a single by Wagner that was booted allowing Wagner to get to second base. Both Pumas scored on a two-run single by Klink. Harter then got Peyton Kingsland on a fly ball to left field.

The Pumas collected 8 hits, all singles off Harter who struck out one. Errors were a huge part of this game for the Random Lake defense.

Steinhorst notched the shutout victory allowing no runs, walked none and struck out 11.

The Pumas play again at Diamond of Champions on Tuesday against Luther Prep and then meet up with Lake Mills on Thursday at Diamond of Champions as well.

They are now 14-1 on the season.
