Conference looks tough

In Lake Mills the L-Cats tipped Columbus in their season opener 2-1 on a pair of third inning unearned runs. Taylor Wollin reached first on a one-out shortstop error and Tessa Kottwitz followed with a base on balls. A passed ball moved the runners up and when it appeared that  Wollin would be out at third on a steal attempt the catcher’s throw was high and over the head of the third sacker allowing her to score. Ellie Evenson then followed with an infield roller to short that allowed Kottwitz to scamper home. That was all the scoring in the game as Taylor Roughen sent 15 Columbus batters back to their dugout with bats in their hands. Columbus got three singles, one each by Farrington, Kelm and Smedema. Columbus had cut down Evenson in the bottom of the first when she tried to score from second on an overthrow on a ball hit to short and picked up and thrown home.

Columbus pitcher Claire Smedema was just as impressive in the circle she forced batters to hang their own bats back on the rack 13 times and allowed just one hit, the single by Evenson. Columbus committed five errors.

In Poynette the Pumas won the program’s 54th straight game with a 20-0 shellacking of Lodi. Poynette pitching allowed just one hit. The winner was Holly Lowenberg who tossed three innings, striking out eight with one base on balls. Brooke Steinhorst finished up allowing one hit, and walked two.

Poynette collected 18 hits, three each by junior Ashia Meister, sophomore Steinhorst with two doubles, sophomore Lowenberg with a homer, while, junior Abby Klink who had two doubles. Freshman Jocelyn Nehls started her Pumas varsity career with a double. The following players all singled for the winners. Freshman Val Heft collected her first-ever varsity hit, while  senior Peyton Gest did as well while  sophomore Laken Wagner, sophomore Alli Ripp, and senior Maysa Clemens rounded out the hit parade.

Lakeside Lutheran took to Luther Prep in Watertown to the tune of 20-3. Poynette plays Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday and DeForest on Friday.
