Game went nine innings In Marathon

Walk of Homer does it for Marathon

It was 2016 and the final conference game of the year for Marathon when the Stratford Tigers were here. It was a game for the ages here in Marathon.

The game went back and forth through seven innings all knotted up at five apiece. The local baseball fans and players started  arriving in the eighth inning after their game was over. Downtown Marathon was full with fans from both schools. Finally, Stratford breaks the tie in the top of the ninth by getting a run across.

That set up a classic finish between two historic Marawood conference powers. Stratford did not score in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half of the 9th with one on and two outs, Marathon’s third baseman and number three batter Julia Anderson stepped in. She took the first two offerings for balls. With that two-ball and no-strike count she turned on a Stratford offering and hit it a rocket down the left field line. It was hooking towards the corner then it just curled around the foul pole.

It was a great ending to one of the more exciting games that I have been a part of.

Publisher's Note: I had never been to the ballpark in downtown Marathon but in 2015 a sectional final game was postponed and played the following day. Our team had not been rained out so I drove to Marathon to watch the game and get a scouting report. It was a memorable game for me in Marathon. In the first inning the favored team jumped to an early lead on a home run which in many ball parks would have been an inning ending fly ball to left field. With two outs and runner aboard the favored teams first sacker hit a high, towering blast to left. The lef tfielder was there however and just needed to take a couple more steps to snare the optic yellow sphere coming down at her. She took one then the ball smacked into her glove as she took the final step  onto that portable, collapsible, orange plastic fence. When she hit the fence it collapsed like it supposed to and when she hit the ground. The ball popped out of her glove and was on the ground outside the field of play, a book rule two-run homer. The game wound up going extra innings with the favored team winning and going on to beat our team in the championship game of the Final Four 2-1.

Tomorrow Memorable Game story will be from Gilman Head Coach Brian Phelps. Be sure to catch that one. A couple of other coaches have joined the team and forwarded their stories. Really there could be 422 stories if everyone joined the team.
