State Tournament Provides lots of Excitement

Belmont, Horicon, Poynette, Seymour and Oshkosh North emerged titles at WIAA State Tournament held at Goodman Diamond on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison over the weekend.

The top ranked Belmont's Braves picked the up their second state championship under head coach Jeff Hodgson. The Braves routed Tri-County on Friday in a five-inning, run-rule mercy game by a score 0f 15-0. On Saturday they put the ball in play against a Blair-Taylor team that struggled to handle what were really routine plays throughout the 7-1 Belmont victory. The second place trophy went to Blair-Taylor and marked the second time in three years that the Wildcats took home a silver batting likeness on the trophy. Horicon was making its 8th state tournament appearance under legendary head coach Roger Schliewe. They entered this year's season as the top ranked Division 4 team in the Fastpitch Chronicle and WFSCA rankings and held on to that spot with a 13-4 win over previously unbeaten Mishicot who were making the school's third state tournament trip (2014,2016 and this year. Poynette's Pumas opened the season as the state's top ranked team in Division 3 and held that ranking from start to finish. They beat Prescott on Saturday 7-0 and beat Campbellsport 4-0 in the title game. This trip marked the 11th such trip for the Poynette softball program, it's 9th championship appearance and it's fifth state title. They have finished a record 4 runnerup spots at the state tournament. The Pumas finished the season 30-0 and have now won 54 games in a row. Click here for more

Seymour, making it's first ever trip to the final four upended first seed Monroe 9-1 in the title game. The loss was the fourth runnerup finish for the Cheesemakers also tying Poynette for the most ever second place spots. For more information just click here

Oshkosh North opened the season under first-year head coach who arrived after a highly successful lengthy career at head coach at Park Falls High School and then the Screaming Eagles of Chequamegon. Dischler  led a talented group of players through a 30-0 season and the championship, the first for the Spartans.  The final score was 4-1 in nine innings For more information just click here
