Lake Mills, WI – In a Capitol Conference North Division game between the top two teams  Poynette’s Molly Anderson twirled a four-hit gem as she shut out the L-Cats, fanned five while walking just one. The final score was 3-0.

The Pumas entered the game with a two game lead on the L-Cats. The two teams are in the same half-sectional and are the top two seeds.

Neither team started their regular pitcher. Lake Mills sent right hander Syd Schwartz to the circle while the Pumas countered with Anderson. Schwartz held off the Pumas through four innings on four hits and was aided by some great defensive work by her teammates. Anderson faced just two over the minimum through four innings.

In the top of the fifth the Pumas got a leadoff walk out of Brianna Schulz and when Lizzie Schwenn was hit by a pitch there were runners on one and two. Morgan Jones then drew a base on balls to load the bases. Brianna Kowald singled to score Mollie Blochwitz who had entered for Schulz. After a fly out to center failed to score the runner from third, Lucy Cuff hit a ball to short that scored Schwenn. Jones then scored on a wild pitch.

“It was a great game,” said Poynette Coach Bob Tomlinson. There were some great plays by Lake Mills on some hard-hit fly balls and line drives into the outfield and their infield defense made plays they had to in order to stay in the game.  Molly was superb as she held a good hitting club to four hits and didn’t allow extra base runners. She proved her mettle over there today.”

Casey Fountain had a pair of hits for the Pumas and Lucy Cuff doubled in the fourth but was erased on a nifty 6-3-5 double play. “That was a run we left out there as Ashley Hellenbrand’s single to left would have easily sent Lucy home with the game’s first run,” said the Poynette coach. “They made a two great throws on the play.”

Lake Mills was led by Ellie Evenson who had a 2x3 game with a single and double and a couple of nice plays in right field. Also making a couple of nice catches was centerfielder Tessa Kottwitz who also had one of the other two hits but was cut down trying to swipe second base by Poynette catcher Mara Millard. Taylor Roughen (pronounced Rowan) had the other single for Lake Mills.

Poynette winds up 24-0 in the regular season and will prepare for post –season action as they await the winner of the 8 vs 9 game on Thursday between Brodhead and Palmyra-Eagle. That second round game will be in Poynette on May 21st. Game time is set for 4:30 PM.
