Shoreland Lutheran takes care of Martin Luther

Final Score was 8-7 in back and forth game

A back and forth battle ended in the Pacers favor on Wednesday night in Somers.  Martin Luther jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Olivia Plewa led off with a hit followed by a bunt single by Rebecca Bruton. Emma Spaciel drove those 2 in and later scored on a drop 3rd strike.  SL scored their first run on an rbi hit by Ruthie Straight in the bottom of 2. Straight then came home on an rbi hit from Emily Jones to push the score to 3-2 ML after 2 innings.  The Pacers took the lead in the 3rd. Haylee Dood led off with double and Hill reached on HBP.  Bree James drove in the 2 runners on a hit to right.  Victoria Miller then scored on a sac fly by Kaylee Ruiz to make the score 5-3 after 3. In the top of the 4th ML got a run on an rbi double by Yaleiza Rodriguez. The Pacers answered with one run in the bottom of the 4th on an Olivia Mooney solo HR to dead center to put the score at 6-4 Pacers after 4. After a scoreless 5th, Rodriguez struck again with an rbi double in the 6th to put the score at 6-5 after 6.  After getting the first out to lead off the 7th inning, Bruton reached on a 2 strike single down the RF line. After fouling off several 2 strike pitches, Autumn Kopac gave ML a 7-6  lead by hitting a HR that just carried the LF corner fence.  The Pacers then struck back. Dodd reached on a HBP to lead off.  After a pop out, Dodd stole 2nd.  Victoria Miller then knocked a base hit to left to score Dodd and reached 3rd on the play as the ball got through the LF. After a strikeout, Bree James hit a tough dribbler to 2nd and was called out at first on a close play.  However, after appeal to the home plate umpire, the first baseman was deemed to have pulled her foot on the play allowing Miller to score and end the game 8-7 in the Pacers favor.

"This team has some poise. They took punch after punch tonight and still found the grit to come from behind. I am very proud of the fight in these girls.  I have never seen a finish like that before.  I feel bad for Martin Luther to lose by that call. Nobody deserved to lose tonight but in the end we made one more play than them."

 

Shoreland leaders were Emily Jones 2-4, 1 rbi, Bree James 2-4, 2 rbi, Mooney 1-3, HR, 1 run 1 rbi, Victoria Miller 2-3, 2 runs 1 rbi, and Dodd 1-3, 2 runs, 2b and a stolen base. Kelsey Hill got the win going 7 innings, 11 hits, 7 runs, 6 ER, 0 BB and 16 K's in the circle.

Shoreland is now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the MCC. Martin Luther drops to 1-3 and 0-2 in conference.  Shoreland next plays Tuesday at Burlington Catholic Central.
