Brianna Schulz three-run home and Lizzie Schwenn's two run double provide the separation

Two Capitol Conference foes and highly ranked teams squared off at the Northwoods Jamboree today in Poynette. The Pumas recorded an 8-3 win in eight innings after having taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Brianna Schulz three-run homer.

Neither team could score from that point until the fifth when the Vanguards pulled to within one run on a two-out, two-run double by Miranda Keith. Heights knotted the score with a single run in the sixth when Taylor Kraemer opened the inning with a double down the leftfield line with one out. Poynette righthander Casey Fountain then struck out the next batter. Poynette intentionally walked Keith but Duhr swung on the first pitch and got enough of the end of the bat on it to move it out over second base sending Kraemer home with the tying run.

The Pumas then went to work in the top of the eighth. Senior Ashley Hellenbrand coached a leadoff walk out of Drager who had entered in the fifth inning in place of Kraemer. Molly Anderson then lined a single up the middle. Zoe Ramber then lined a shot off Drager's glove loading the bases with nobody out. Lizzie Schwenn, sharing the #8 spot as the Flex player for Poynette then fell behind in the count at a ball and two strikes. She lined the next pitch deep to center sending Hellenbrand and Anderson scurrying home with the lead runs. After pop up to the catcher Casey Fountain drew a base on balls before Brianna Kowald reached on a fielder's choice. Lucy Cuff then collected her third hit of the day with a single to right field that scored Schwenn and Fountain but the ball from the outfield was errant and got through the infield and into foul territory in front of the third base dugout. That allowed the fleet-footed Kowald to sprint home with the 8th run.

The game featured 21 hits, 11 by Heights and 10 by the Pumas. Casey Fountain went the distance for Poynette, striking out 13 and walking just one. Drager suffered the loss.

Earlier in the day Poynette had beaten Thorp and Thorp followed that loss with a win over Heights.
