There was a time when Oshkosh West was a Division 1 state power with numerous trips to the state tournament. (7 times). The last state tournament trip for West was in 2013. Second year head coach Tim Kohl is working diligently within a very tough conference to get his club back to that championship level. Last year, his first at the helm, they secured a regional title so they are looking for “better” in 2019. HYe returns Emily Miller, a second team all-conference performer along with Leah Engstrom on second team. Also returning are three first team all-conference players in Lacey Cruz, Breanna Davis and Annika Johnson. Kohl says that pitching will be the team’s strength with two possible all-conference pitchers. “We have some big holes to fill in the batting order as well as in our infield,” said Kohl. “A few underclass players will have to overcome a huge learning curve if we are to be successful.” He sees cross-town rival Oshkosh North as the favorite in the FVA as well as the sectional.
Oshkosh West 11, Appleton West 0
It took a while for Oshkosh West to get going, but they were able to score 11 runs on 11 hits. Lacey Cruze kept Appleton West in check striking out 10, walking 4, and only allowing 2 hits in 6 innings of work.
OW scored early in the first inning with a single by Leah Engstrom who then later scored on an Appleton West error. They put two more on in the 5th off a lead-off single by Taylor Emory, followed by an RBi double by Emily Miller. Miller scored on a single by Brianna Geis.
In the top of the sixth Oshkosh West plated six more highlighted by back to back RBI singles by Brianna Geis and Annika Johnson.
Another RBI double by Emily Miller and an RBI single by Leah Engstrom in the top the seventh rounded out the scoring for Oshkosh West.
