Struck in the Head by errant pre-game warm-up throw Tomlinson spends Jamboree time in ER getting stitches and checked out

Poynette won two games at their Poynette Fastpitch Jamboree on Saturday. The two wins were numbers 20 and 21 for the Pumas. However, Head Coach Bob Tomlinson had to rely on text updates to his emergency room bed to keep track of what was going on in the game between the Pumas and Chargers from Kettle Moraine Lutheran.

Early in the day and before the first pitches of the Jamboree had been thrown, Tomlinson was sitting on the diamond grooming machine outside the field of play. He said that he was immediately next to the 6' tall sideline fence separating live ball territory from dead ball territory.

" I was just relaxing a little after having spent the first three hours after arriving at 5 am getting things ready for a big day," said the coach. "I was watching the SPASH girls go through their warm up throws out in rightfield; watching the Verona girls take some batting practice from the leftfield side and watching Random Lake taking some cuts in the north batting cage. After a bit I remembered that the scoreboard needed turning on so I started the machine, looked to my left to make sure there was nobody I could run into. I was about to step on the accelerator pedal when a blow to my head took place."

A ball thrown from inside the field of play cleared the sideline fence and struck Tomlinson on the right side of his head causing a split to his outer ear as well as some other issues. Thanks to Dr. Mclesh,DDS of Stevens Point who was present to watch his daughters play, Tomlinson got cleaned up and the blood flow shut off. Later in the morning he took the advice of local a local EMT and headed for the Emergency Room where he was checked out and stitched up with three sutures.

In the meantime the Pumas were taking on Kettle Moraine Lutheran where they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hits in the inning were collected by Maegan Brookins and Haley Radewan.

Poynette pitcher Mattie Bredeson set the Chargers down in order in the first inning. In the bottom of the second KML loaded the bases after the first two batters went down on ground ball outs. A single, double and hit batter loaded them before Bredeson fanned the #9 batter to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Pumas got another marker in the third when Radewan drove in Renz.

The top of the fourth saw KML get three consecutive hits by Stern. Off and Herman and scored two runs in the inning to make it 4-2. The Pumas answered back in their half of the fourth after there were two out and no runners aboard. Allison Tomlinson singled as did Heather Kimberley and when Brookins lined a singled through the infield and Renz followed with another Radewan hit a two-run single making the score 7-2. Poynette plated three more in the fifth to make it 10-2 and that's the way the game ended.

Brookins and Radewan were both 4x. Radewan had four rbi. Renz was 2x4 while Tomlinson was 2x2 and Kimberley was 2x3.

Bredeson got the win, allowing two earned runs, struck out seven and walked just one.

In their next game the Pumas played Madison West. The head coach returned to the dugout after getting back from the emergency room but by that time they'd built a sizeable lead and went on to the 12-2 victory. Bredeson notched the win while Radewan pitched the final two innings. Radewan went 3x3 to go 7x7 on the day with six rbi. Tomlinson collected a pair of hits including a double. Kimberley remained hot by going 2x2 and had a double negated when she batted out of order. Brookins was 2x3.

The Pumas host Lake Mills on Tuesday and Lakeside Lutheran on Friday. They wrap up regular season action the following week with a trip to Watertown and Luther Prep before hosting Columbus.
