Three run third and Brooke Dredske's homer are the difference

Poynette - Poynette scored a quick run in the top of the first inning here today when Maegan Brookins doubled to left and scored on an ensuing rbi single up the middle by Rachel Renz.

In the Pumas thid Renz singled again, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt that was booted by pitcher Sara Beckendorf. Brooke Dredske rattled the chain link in leftcenter against a stiff breeze that scored Renz. When Allison Tomlinson single up the middle Dredske raced home with the fourth run.

If the Pumas had any thoughts of running in some more runs and taking this one without a fight from the Knights they had something else coming. Luther got a run in the bottom of the third when the #9 batter, Carlena Young singled with two outs and Anna Hammelman and Clare Schultz both singled sending Young home. The score was the 4-1.

"We had left some runs out on the field early that could have given us some more space between us but we failed to capitalize," said Poynette Coach Bob Tomlinson.

In the bottom of the fourth the Knights got a leadoff single from Anna Dobbie and ten one by Cynda Protsman before pitcher Mattie Bredeson struck out Kaitlyn Kammerer. Braiden Decker then singled to score Dobbie and when Keely Paus hti a ball to short it was bobbled and then thrown away at first and then thrown away at the plate to allow both runs to score. Bredeson and the Pumas escaped more trouble however.

In the top of the seventh with two down and a 1-2 count on Dredske the junior launched a missle to dead centerfield that defied the breeze that ha had help up two other blasts that wound up being doubles for a home run and a 5-3 lead.

That's the way the game ended and Poynette returns to the state tournament for the second consecutive year and the ninth time since 1998. They will face Grantsburg in the first Division 3 semi-final on Friday at 1:00 PM.
